Pt 3 crop destroying bunnies (and a fox) with the 22-250

Post by Elmer » 15 Oct 2016, 10:41 pm

Last Thursday turned out to be perfect for some long range sniping with the 22-250, 20c next to zero wind and another crop that the local bunnies had taken a shine to.
The first one was at 380yds (347mts), second at 450yds (411mts), third at 385yds (352mts), fourth 521yds (476mts), fith at 420yds (384mts) and finally a fox at 405yds (370mts),all pests were shot through the chest using Winchester Varmint 55gn Ballistic silver tips
At the moment, most of the rabbit warrens in my area are covered with thick pastures making spotting them almost impossible, the only bare patches seems to be crops where the pests have chewed there way through.
The fox, decided to stop and snack on some bunny bits from a previous kill ....that was her last snack.
cheers,
Sean.

Amazing that you can hit them from so far away. You must have an excruciatingly accurate ranging/trajectory/wind allowance system.

Thanks for the kind words mate, sounds like your on the right track, are you using a .223?. If you can hit cans regularly at that range you should have no probs hitting bunnies at 350-400.
Just go for chest shots, at LR its too easy to blow off a jaw , nose ect if you go for the head...its not a pretty sight seeing them running around in circles with half their face missing.

Cheers mate, I dont use APPS or thousand dollar anemometers, just a decent RF, (mines a Leupold 1200) a simple eighty buck (yes you read right  ) caldwell anemometer and ballistic chart I drew up from the JB website which I modified for 1/4 click MOA adjustments for winds up to 20mph in 2.5 increments.
Also, Iall my elevation adjustments are in 5yd increments, this is especially important when the range is past the 400 mark.

 Thanks Brett, Im thinking of doing a long range (for the .22WMR) vid at ranges from 150-200yds but will have to wait a little longer for the thick grasses to flatten out.

Best shooting video ever.I am going to have to rethink my ability as I am head shooting roos at under 80m.I need all my crew to watch this as the f "£$£"%^ers miss roos off the back of a ute at 50m with a .243W with a 10X scope under spotlight.I have the property to do this sort of thing and I know I can tune my 26 inch barrel 7mm rem mag to do the job.with 100gr pills it is similar trajectory to the 22/250.I am not sure a standard .223 would be up to that range unless it had some work done to it

I had better clarify that before all the .223 owners get stuck into me but I am a big fan of using the right amount of power to do the job not cranking up loads to play catch up and I have taken a lot of farmers sons and cousins out doing Kangaroos on their own properties cos they are keen and I just wish to have the carcasses off adjoining land and I have seen what 22/250 can do in the right hands. Its a lot more cannon than.222.223

Thanks Duncan...yeah mate I think your crew needs a few sessions on targets...you reckon they could be flinching?
The .223 should handle them out to 200yds with head shots (thats what most pro shooters use) and your 7mm with 100gn pills would be explosive on them.

I agree with you, I dont believe in wringing the last fps out of any cal with way over the top pressures etc, in my book, if you want more range and power you get a larger case with more powder in it and a sleek bullet like one of the 6.5s or 7mm.
cheers.

yes I have seen flinching first hand with another bloke I took out.Had the safety on and there was a clear grunt and flinch. Why do they all want a .243 with 100gr pills as a first rifle

No mate, a different one, he has several crops in this year with pretty much the same scenario.

Beats me, they should start of with a small cf like the .223 to get used to muzzle blast and recoil (which aint much).
