Well done to whomsoever got that one.

FMD,,, "Relocate" , I hope you relocate them humanely and to lush pastures full of chooks and newborn lambs.

G'day DJ,

To make you happy, I did shoot two of the mongrels this past week. They seem to be making themselves known again after a brief absence. An acquaintance 6 miles away has been seeing them hunting around his ewes and has whacked a few. I'm expecting to see a few more now my cows are calving - I expect the mongrels will come hunting for some after-birth.

I thought this was interesting. Cunning little bugger. Also seems greenies like shooters when it suits them.

Channeling my inner authoritarianism VICPOL while on patrol I found this trouble maker out last night without a pass/permit on her, needless to say extreme prejudice was used to discourage that sort of behaviour. Dans still winning this seasons cull by a long shot though.........

G'day,

I shot an older vixen last night and was perplexed by her 'antics' at bullet impact. Range was 92 yards, downhill and I was shooting 50 gr. Federal .222 Rem ammunition. I took video of the shot using my ATN 4K sight. My aim point was in line with her front left leg and about 2.5 inches up from her sternum as she crouched down eating dog food I had put out. She was side-on to me. At impact she jumped around like a headless chook so, when she gave me a chance, I shot her again and that finished her. I didn't examine her until this afternoon. The video confirmed that at the moment of shooting and in the first frame after the shot the cross hairs were exactly on my aim point on her body and I should have hit her in/around her heart inside her chest cavity. When I examined her I found that the bones of her lower right leg [radius and ulna], i.e. on the side away from me, were shattered. It was only when I looked at the inside of her left leg at chest level that I found the bullet exit wound - about one inch in diameter. I probed the wound channel with a piece of wire and it ran to about where I aimed on her left side. Further examination showed that the bullet did not penetrate her rib cage but appeared to have deflected down and out to strike the inside of her right leg destroying it.

I suspect I should have aimed a bit higher to make allowance for the fact I was about 10 feet higher than her? Presumably the bullet slid under her skin, but deflected over the ribs to then exit through her 'armpit' and strike her right leg.

Jim

PS: I just had another look at the carcass and realised that the wound in the vixen's 'armpit' is much bigger than the one inch I reported above: in fact the whole area between her forelegs has been blown open and is raw tissue, yet there is no indication that the bullet actually impacted bone before it hit the right lower fore-limb. The left leg is intact as are the ribs. Apparently bullets can do strange things at impact.

Methinks it's time to meet and greet in person.

I got him in almost exactly the same spot where the trail camera caught him 2 nights earlier.
When I first picked him up in the scope he almost fooled me into thinking he was a feral dog, cos he was running up a hill and
had his tail "up" like the dogs do.
Whereas foxes usually run with the tail streamlining straight behind.

300 Blackout Hollow Point brought the meeting to an end fairly abruptly.

I haven't been out much like everyone due to covid. So it's been a while. Picked up this fairly big dog the other avo with a cheap copy of a reed type caller. Hit him a bit far back so had to give him another unfortunately. I think he could be the same one that I've called in twice in the past but been unable to get a shot off.

Got this one 3 days ago, middle of the day.
I missed the first long shot due to high winds, but after the miss a magpie started attacking the fox while it was trying to work out where the shot came from.

G'day All,

Am I delusional or has a post [yesterday] by mchughcb referring to a video of fox hunting disappeared? I know I'm not hungover as I don't drink grog, I'm not taking the sorts of pills administered in the old funny farms, nor have I fallen off my bike and whacked myself on the bonce.
