I have Silva and it works well. Got one of these T2 whistles a while ago and they are fantastic. 2 different sounds and 1/3 the price.

G'day, I have been having success lately with this whistle from Foxcalls.com:

https://foxcalls.com/index.php?route=pr ... duct_id=68

Foxes have been coming in fast and virtually as soon as I started blowing it.

Sounds very bird like. I noticed on the last (2nd) visit i havnt seen any rabbits. So will concentrate on using other calls now.

G'day Oldbloke,

There are a number of similar calls made by the same mob in different pitches and each with a different timbre - think the difference between the 'voices of a clarinet compared to an oboe compared to a saxophone - and I have had some success with all of them, but this 'shrieker' or 'squeaker' does gain their attention - and we don't have any bunnies around; only 'roos and hares.

l do some work for a pro at times including culling foxes
what is used is a foxpro caller that we set out around 100m away but we also drag a bait around in a big circle to get a smell happening
the bait is usually just a lump of crap meat with some tuna oil over it, it is dragged as far and wide that you want to go criss crossing back and forth
then just sit back and wait, we do alright late in the arvo as well as at fox time, around 10-11 oclock at night seems to be when
he also has the night sight gear, thermal ect.. to spot
it could be set up to suit yourself in how far you would want to go eg... put a sent trail and baits and whistling
it is different for a pro because he is getting a heap more money for the foxes than the recreational hunter but the tactics can be used

G'day Marksman,

I have an Icotec 350 caller and occasionally have scattered cheap canned dog food in a circle on the ground around the Icotec in the direction from which I hope the fox will be coming. I have had some success with the Icotec, but lately am doing better with the mouth calls and they are easier to carry.

Going to make one of these to try. More bird like sounding.

HI Oldbloke,

Well that whistle will be a lot cheaper than the commercial ones. I always have a bait station operating at one site in a paddock behind my house which seems to be on a fox 'highway' from SW to NE. They come around a large dam which is fenced and offers lots of cover on the banks and encounter my bait plus trail camera.

the tuna oil is a trick of the trade that really does work but any bait would help with your setup l reckon

Yeh, Ive heard tuna oil for dogs, foxes and cats in the past thats why I thought of the stale fish bait, esp since I have it handy. Tried it once before to no availe but different situation.
Made the latex whistle. Might take a while to master I think.  Bit tricky.

So, back to my original question. Is a fox every 4 or 5 outings fairly normal? (Not spotlighting)

Oldbloke: "Is a fox every 4 or 5 outings fairly normal?"

Being new to the fox shooting game that would be about my score rate for a while, except on my own back paddocks where I set bait stations. Then it was pretty easy for a while as none of the blighters had been hunted for several years and they were quite casual, even cheeky. I could just about tell when they would arrive and I would walk out 15 minutes before 'show time', whack one and come back in to watch the TV. However shooting on other properties demonstrated my complete lack of hunting skills. I saw lots of foxes, but was either in the wrong place, too far away, they saw me first and/or I was simply unprepared for how quickly the little beggars arrive and then depart. Many times there was no chance of me getting an aimed shot off. Mostly my poor positioning was the problem as I would call them in, but they would stay on the edge of the brush - I could see them with the thermal and see their eyes and heads - but I could not get a clear shot through the reeds or light bush. Then they would get suspicious and take off.

I guess that's why I am enjoying hunting foxes more than hunting [dumb] bunnies.

Welcome to the 2020 , design an auto drip tuna oil dispenser competition...... en gun forum members all eligible... first prize is absolutely nothing ....... best I can think of for the moment is some sort of bolt/ thread arrangement that offers variable pressure on a small piece of flexible clear plastic hose

I'm puzzled. Seems/sounds you intend to drive around dripping oil.

I would just spray a bit at 2 or 3 locations. More targeted. Excuse the pun

that's the idea of soaking some meat for a bait station and dragging it around leading back to the bait but soak it overnight so it gets right in then take it in a bin away from where you want it, then drag it back to the spot, peg it down and p!ss off and leave it having a look from a distance
a figure 8 is how we do it sometimes, over a very big area setting the bait and squealer up in the middle of the 8 so the scent always leads to the bait
it works well, its a buzz to watch the fox running at the bait while he is sniffing the scent line

Old bloke I just wanted all of my frequently used tracks to smell attractive to draw in the foxes and cats close to the tracks so that as I’m moving from pig hunting areas to other pig hunting areas I can shoot some small game on the way ..... I have 5 or 6 designated pig hunting zones on the place I hunt but I’m loving the fox and cat encounters too

Figure 8 good point marksman. .....all the rain we had means my cultivation paddocks are now sewn so I can’t drive quad on them so fig 8 hard to do but I’ll work something out. Iv done well on those bare ground paddocks with pigs entering the paddocks at night just for the stubble , but now that seed is sewn and soil moisture profile is good perhaps I might be in for some serious action over the next few months now that I have real crops to watch over. Fingers crossed.

G'day,

Some years ago, before I took up fox shooting my neighbour used to shoot on my property. One afternoon I told him that one of my cows had died due top complications giving birth - the calf got stuck and I could not get it 'unstuck' - and that he should go out that night to see who came to visit the carcase. I had attached a chain to the dead beast and dragged it down closer to the house with the tractor so the knacker could collect it next morning. The weather was quite warm and the carcase had bloated. The neighbour shot two foxes, one near the carcase, and spotted another tracking along the drag trail with its nose to the ground. It was an expensive way to bait foxes.
