How screwed am I?

Post by darkred » 12 Jul 2024, 9:37 am

I'm in the process of getting my firearms license in NSW, and hit the "returned to applicant" roadblock. I'm waiting for further explanation now, but the wait is killing me.

I've been holding the spotlight my whole life while family and friends shoot, and finally bit the bullet and applied for my own license. My "genuine reason" for applying was rec hunting with permission from a rural landholder, with my uncle owning 4 thousand acres we've always hunted on.

In the "animals/vermin" to be shot section, he's written kangaroos. My silly self didn't think anything of that, and submitted it as is. My bad. I'm thinking that's probably where the problem is, because I thought my application was pretty airtight otherwise.

Now I'm just wondering how screwed I am. Will I be able to resubmit a new permission letter? Will I have to find a new landowner? Join a club? Give up and keep holding the spotlight?

My guess is that you'll get a please explain letter where you can respond. But unless he has cull permits permanently in place I don't see it being a valid genuine reason. You could email them and ask what the problem is I guess. As it isn't your statement that is the issue, rather your supporting landholder's statement, my guess is you're fine, but will likely need a new supporting statement that doesn't mention shooting native wildlife. Or get an R licence and hunt in the bush instead.

I would suggest settling in somewhere comfortable, with some provisions, a good book and a sleeping bag, and ring Firearms Registry.
Courage is knowing it might
hurt, and doing it anyway.
Stupidity is the same
.
And that's why life is hard
