Applying for PTA before having a safe

Post by kabab42 » 23 Jul 2024, 3:25 pm

Hi, im in NSW
im still sorting out where im going to store my first rifle, is it possible to apply for a PTA for it before I actually sort out a safe? would be good if I could skip the initial month long mandatory wait time while I sort out storage haha
My understanding was you only need a safe if you actually have a firearm, but the online PTA form requires you to list an address before applying.
I wont get a safe inspection until i actually have firearms registered to my name right?
thanks

I don't believe there is any requirement to own a safe unless you own firearms.
I see no issue with applying for a permit _unless_ the permit insists you have compliant safe storage already in place.
I'd be surprised if Police will put resources towards secure storage inspections of people that don't own firearms, they have enough on their plate just trying to inspect those that do.

You have to have secure storage before you even have a licence was my understanding.

Secure storage does not have to be at your home address.

The regulations here in NSW, state that you must advise of an "event number" on your PTA application. That is the number you are issued after a successful safe inspection. No event number = no PTA. (Cat H) My local plod told me that a long time ago. Double check if you wish, but how can FAR issue a PTA for either a rifle of handgun without confirmation of how it will be stored.?
Why risk it. ( don't forget that you at the mercy and adjudication of which ever plod comes inspect your premises) Get an approved safe, get your PTA, then store the firearms safely. If you want to cut corners, well then that is your business.

The event number only applies for Cat H, for Cat A/B that isn't needed.

I had already stated the catH bit. But you missed my point. If you get a PTA and buy a cat A/B firearm, take it home, so where is to be stored. In a locked cupboard? It or they must be stored in an approved type as stipulated by the Police Commissioner. You may as well obtain the correct type of storage first, while you are waiting for your PTA.

That's what he intends to do, apply for a permit now and sort out his secure storage while waiting for the permit to come through.

Your wording appeared to imply that the event number was required for all PTAs, not just the cat H, so my apologies for misreading your post.

I do agree with you that they should organize the correct storage first. I know I had my safe installed around the same time as I'd put in my PTA, I just can't remember if it was before or after I submitted the PTA.

The law allows them to see your secure storage before granting your licence or permits. Although I have never heard of this happening unless you are applying for a dealer licence.

No need for an apology. The original post was a bit confusing and so was my reply. The important thing is that he will be on the right track. :)
