NSW license card delivery timeline

Post by Speeds » 10 Jan 2025, 6:25 pm

Howdy, guys! hope I'm posting in the right place.
Been on the long road to getting my license back after regretfully letting my minor's permit expire some years ago.
For anyone who has recently received their license or has anything about their experience to add I'd love to know how long it took
you to receive your physical firearms license in the mail after getting your photo taken and also how long it took your online status to switch to "valid" or "issued"
Maybe I've done too much reading online but it seems to take everyone about 5 days or so to receive the actual licence after photo is taken but I had my photo taken 8 days ago today and my status switched to valid 1 day ago (day 7) but still no sign of the card and now going into the weekend.
I'm going to stay with family out of town over the weekend and was hoping to have my license by then as they have a local range we all used to shoot at and I would be able to pick it up if it arrives early next week.
Just wondering if this seems like a relatively normal timeline and when I can hopefully expect a delivery based on your experiences.
Sorry if this comes across as impatient just keen as to get back into things! :)
Cheers, guys!

Update: its now 7 days later (17th Jan) and still nothing. it's now the weekend so by this monday when deliveries start up again, it's gonna be 18 days since I had my photo taken. Has anyone experienced a wait like this on the arrival of their card?

Most public servants are still on annual leave so not much happens this time of year.

Take away weekends and on this Monday it is only about 12 business days since your photo so not to long considering the system.

From memory, it was about 2 weeks from the change to 'valid' on the portal to receiving the license in the mail. However, as I was renewing my license it was a different situation, as I was still able to shoot whilst waiting.

And that was in April/May, so well away from the mess that is Christmas.

Well that gives me some hope at least to hear! Thanks for the info mate.
The firearms registry reckon it went through to the mail the day I had the photo taken but I wouldn’t be surprised if the letters just sit somewhere before actually ending up in the hands of auspost.

This is a good point. I just got worried considering they claimed to have already sent it the day I had my photo taken. That being said, who knows whether that means it was actually given to auspost or just moved to their mailing office and waits somewhere while the Christmas/New Years back log clears.

My pistol application had to travel less than 200km to Melbourne, registered post, and it arrived in Melbourne the day after it was posted, so AusPost then sent it on a seven-day jaunt to Perth :-)

I'm glad I didn't hang around, if they don't get your documents within 28 days of the application they cancel it.

Gotta love Auspost for that one
Btw how did you manage to get it registered? Do they do that by default or did you specifically ask?
I’ve had another one sent out and I’m thinking about calling up and asking to have it registered.

I went into the Post shop and bought two Registered Post A4 envelopes. Then when I posted them they recorded the tracking details. Cost about $10 each from memory to buy the envelopes, don't think there was any additional charge for posting them. Posted mine and my girlfriend's together, over the counter on Tuesday morning, hers arrived on Friday morning, three days later, mine arrived yesterday, ten days later.
