NSW Firearms Licence question (A, B, H)

Post by oldmateadz » 10 Jul 2016, 3:28 am

Hey guys,

I currently hold a NSW Firearms Licence for category H (still in the probationary period) and I've just recently completed the longarms safety course for category A and B, with the genuine reasons being target shooting and hunting/vermin control. All the paperwork is going to be sent off to the registry in the next couple of days.

My question: is the category H licence a separate licence to the rest (A, B, C, D, etc)? Or will the RTA give me an updated licence with A, B, H on it?
The reason I ask is because the range officer at the longarms course vaguely said it was 2 separate licences (though he didn't know too much about cat H/pistols), and it got me thinking. If it's true then that's 2 separate cards, with 2 separate fees... $200 each for 5 years. $400 every 5 years is a bit rough.

So yeah, one card with category H, and one card with category A and B? Or one new card with A, B, H - with one fee?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

You will have 2 licenses, 1 Cat A / B Firearms and 1 Cat H Probationary Pistol. Once you get your full Cat H it will be added to your existing Cat A/B and you'll need to go to the RMS to have a new card issued in category A,B,H, this is how it worked for me.

I think its all changed now the RMS offices lost the right to print licenses.

Previously I would have thought you'd get a photograph notice, go to the RTA to get a pic taken and they'd print a lic with A, B and H prob on it, then when you finish your Prob you'd get another.

I've never had two lic cards but it may be different now

My main concern was the 2 x $200 licence fees (which is what the guy at the longarms safety course told me). 2 separate licences seems silly, so I'm hoping that after my probationary period is up on the cat H, I'll get the updated licence with all 3 categories on it - with the one fee.

So you started with PPL, then added cat A/B afterwards?

I had my cat a/b, then I went and did my ppl, separate licence, once I got my cat h, the 3 cats were combined on one licenced

Your PPL is a separate licence.. They merge when it's you get your H

Just another quick question!
Seeing how I already have my PPL, do I still have the mandatory 28 day waiting period before I can get my cat A/B licence? Considering I already had the 28 day period for the PPL?

Yes you will.

The 28 day is for each category.. So unfortunately yes.
