Storing guns at Police station/store while away mandatory?

Post by meateater » 16 Dec 2013, 5:19 pm

Hi guys,

I just want to clarify about storing your firearms if you go away for an extended period of time... Is this mandatory at any point?

I've seen it come up in a few places or Police docs about storing firearms saying it "should" be stored with the Police or at your local store. Nothing as clear as "must" be done though.

I have a couple of work trips and a holiday and other things coming up where I could be away for 5-6 weeks.

Fair enough concern I guess, but my place is secure as can be for a house. Deadbolts, monitored alarm, bolted safe, all the rest. Don't really feel the need to store my guns elsewhere while I'm away if possible...

Thanks.

Nothing mandatory as far as I know.

It's just recommended for obvious reasons... No legal requirement though.

No, not mandatory, just recommended so thieves don't have all the time in the world to work their way into your gun safe while your gone for weeks.

If you have doubts about leaving your kit with the fuzz, most store charge $25 a month or something for storage.

Up to you, $25 for piece of mind isn't going to break the bank.

hehe, nah.

It was more an issue of how much respect they'd be treated with.

Paying at a gun store I guessed they might get a little more TLC than just being dropped in a cabinet somewhere at the station.

Talked to the local cops in Perth a few years back and they don't do storage anymore - have to go to LGS.
The cops (actually quite helpful at my local station in Joondalup I am pleased to say) say that it is a good thing to store them at LGS if you are away for any period of time.
One issue arises with people working FIFO where they are away from home 2 weeks in 3 (or more) as in reality this is no different from going on holidays? (Also an issue if an unlicensed person (wife) is still at home during this time). It can not be practical to lock up your firearms 2 weeks in 3 at a LGS
Maybe a LGS should have a secure facility that shooters can access at all times? - no scrub that idea. Although there would be some benefits (unlimited gun safe size), the powers that be would enforce the storage of all firearms in these facilities. Not a good thing.

Just cutting back on workload on their end I guess?

If you sign them into a dealer for storage you're actually transferring them to the dealer here in VIC too. It's not just them sticking em in the back room for a few weeks.

When you get them back out you have to to PTA's again for your own rifles
