Hope that means by the end of the week for you!

My mate did his in late Feb 2019 and got referred to ServiceNSW in April 2019 (approx 6-7 weeks). Sounds like the FAR has slipped behind the timing we were seeing earlier this year ..

The semi good news is that they seem to be on-time for PTAs .. you might have that to look forward to ..

Yeah end of the week would be reasonable, hope that's the case.

I've put a layby down on my first gun due to the stock running low...

I'm in week 6 now, so its daily checks of the register from now on in :)

Yeah lets hope so hey, haven't heard any news from Ckraus either, and his application went in on the same day as mine. I will keep you posted in any case, hopefully i get referred tomorrow morning,

I also have money down on a CZ 457 in the Boyds AT-One stock, going to put a diamondback tactical on it and use it as a little bench-rest rifle. the rifle itself wont be in the country for another few months yet anyway.

Back near start of the year we only saw them come thru early Saturday mornings - but I know what it’s like to have to check every day - you just need to feel that punishment every morning

I saw those advertised... have you looked into getting a CZ457 and AT-One stock separately later? You might just get it sooner (than towards end of year as I believe CZ452 are readily available). You get to shoot it first and see whether you need the adjustable stock ..

I got a CZ452 Varmint Heavy barrel  ..

Did you submit yours on the 29/4 razor? That's when I submitted mine. I called the FAR again on Friday and got on to another woman who said current wait times are 6-8 weeks on top of the 28 day cooling off...looks like we have a bit to go yet.

I have thought about doing that, the only issue is that the standard Boyds stock has a plastic grip + fore-end which does not look so good. My mate has a cz 455 varmint so I know how they feel to shoulder. The wait doesn't bother me too much, I would prefer a rifle that i am happy with at the end of the day

Sorry, I meant to say I think CZ457 are readily available - I saw one last week at Horsley Park gun shop.

So u get the CZ457 you want now and shoot it .. and a boyd/chassis when they’re available.

I’m waiting on adding Target onto my rec. hunter licence ... 4 weeks in ..

I know FAR we’re doing audits of clubs a couple of months ago .. so thinking their resources are being distracted by those activities.. not sure

Also keep in mind Lithgow just sent out a shipment a few weeks ago. There should still be some LA101s available in most configurations. They usually vanish for months at a time because they're so popular in Australia, so worth checking them out as well. But for current iterations, it's between the T1x, CZ 457 and LA101. Just depends what you prefer. But right now everything should be in, unless it sold out faster than expected.

I may consider doing that yet, or just find one with a nice walnut stock. all depends on how long my license and PTA take unfortunately.

I have often wondered what the differences between a rec hunting and target licenses are? What do you benefit with a target license rather than a hunting one?

thanks for the heads up Zeju, will keep my eyes open for a good looking Lithgow. I agree with you regarding the T1x, CZ 457 and LA101, all seem to be great little rifles.

What do you benefit with a target license rather than a hunting one?

For me, I enjoy shooting clays, mainly because I can do it more frequently than hunt (and hitting moving targets is top fun) .. There are a number of clay target disciplines (eg. DTL/Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, etc).

These days (at the venue where I shoot) they're having to crack down on what rec. hunters can do. The FAR has given them clarification / instructions that rec. hunters are really only allowed to sight-in (pattern) their shotguns at the range (or test / get familiar with different types of ammo).

Their interpretation is that a rec. hunter should NOT shoot many of these disciplines, competitions or events (that keep score) because that goes well beyond just sighting-in their firearms to get ready for a hunt.

Further, the venue needs to have range officers (safety officers) to supervise rec. hunters whilst on these "target" layouts .. so that forces me to only shoot on a particular layout, which is supervised but gets pretty busy at times.

For me, getting target on my licence is a natural next step and something I'm happy to do (except for the wait) .. it will give me the benefit of shooting the different disciplines and if one layout is busy, then I can switch to something that is less so ..

If you're already underway with your rec. hunter licence, start with that .. try out a few different things and see whether target becomes something you want to pursue

At that time, look into the requirements - ie. minimum shoots as they compound. So, you might have to go on 2 hunts (to satisfy your rec. hunter reason) as well as 4 competitions (to satisfy your target licence).

Good luck with the application!

I wonder if this means that they have finished the background checks, and the system will update it on Saturday morning?

Yes and there was a shooting in Parkes last week, which won't have sped up the process. Even though the shotgun used was unregistered, it puts us law abiding shooters in a bad light.

Applied on 4th April, approved and forwarded to Service NSW on 17th June. I used the online application process. Just been to get my photo done so another week or so waiting for photo license in the mail. My local dealer said first permits are taking at least six weeks for some reason. At the moment I'm cautiously optimistic it will be all sorted by Spring...

My status changed this morning :-)

29/4 - Application via ServiceNSW completed
10/5 - Letter from FAR received in post confirming lodgment of application dated 3/5. Letter mentioned minimum processing time is 6 to 8 weeks.
7/7 - Status changed to ‘referred to ServiceNSW for issue’.

Interestingly I applied for my sons minors permit at the same time (paper based) and no news at all on that one yet. Although they were quick to take payment :-)

Damn .. I just submitted applications for my kids during the week ... I sent using express post with tracking. Interestingly, it was redirected from Murwillumbah back to Parramatta ...

Maybe the delays are because they’re moving offices? :unknown:

I’m not sure if they are ... just don’t know why else they would’ve redirected the mail ..

Hoping u can let us know when the kids permits come thru ckraus :friends:

Yup, all progress. Waiting on the PTA now. Dealer has the rifle I bought and had shipped to him. He tells me it looks really good, but I'm resisting the temptation to go have a look until I can pick it up. Sometime over the next few weeks need to get the safe installed...

Application went into the system on the 13th May and still waiting for a status change. Given what others have posted I guess it may change status in the next week or two. Looks like a minimum 10 weeks here in NSW.

How long is the PTA taking at the moment?

Bit of an update. Despite showing referred to ServiceNSW on 7/7 it’s been a full 7 days and still no letter has arrived. Called them to check and was advised Australia Post can take up to 5 weeks. Where are they posting this from :-(

Also looks like they have lost my sons application. Have logged a query for someone to check.

So far has to be the worst government department i’ve ever ever ever dealt all my life.

Happy to follow the rules, happy to pay the money but this is an absolute disgrace in terms of service.

The story I got told is they send the paperwork to parramatta to take payment then send them back. Very inefficient.

5 weeks, that’s BS

I always said they should let us collect the paperwork from a local police station - print it out there and get us to sign for it (unless they can’t trust their own police officers) .. or better yet just send it to ServiceNSW for them to use same photo as drivers licence and get us to collect from a nominated local branch ... having to use AustPost is absolutely crazy.

Anything that comes from FAR (Murwillumbah) is a minimum 6 day wait for me .. to Sydney metro.

Photo licence from Parkes was 5 days

ckraus wrote:Also looks like they have lost my sons application. Have logged a query for someone to check.

About the worst thing you want to hear.

Hope they fast track it and sort it out quickly for u

Wonder how long it would take before they admit that ... they still haven’t taken payment for my sons applications, AustPost say received 4 July 2019.

ckraus wrote:The story I got told is they send the paperwork to parramatta to take payment then send them back. Very inefficient.

That is unbelievable..

What I heard from an RO today was, was he heard that they (FAR) were piling up applications then dealing with them in batches .. so one week they would do fresh firearm lic applications, the next week might be minors permits, the next might be something else.

This sounds right to me, as a bunch of u guys that had firearm applications spread across April (ie. 4th to 27th) were all approved at the same time.

K2bonsai wrote:How long is the PTA taking at the moment?

I’m not personally aware of current delays for first time PTAs ..

Replies in this thread in Jan 2019 said it was pretty. much 28 days plus a week (that was also my experience): viewtopic.php?f=74&t=11289#p187223

Replies in this thread in April 2019 said much the same: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=11311

If it helps, I had a subsequent PTA issued in a few days and paperwork received 6 days later (mid June 2019). A 2 week process .. I think PTAs without a cooling off period are still dealt with weekly from all reports ..

ckraus wrote:Will let you know how I go..

Very much appreciated.

they're making s**t up!

I called today (applied 14th May - tomorrow will be 9 weeks) I was told there is a 28 day cooling off period - that I'm really only on week 4.

I questioned her, because the letter I received didn't mention a 28 day hold period and was told it is legislated.

Just sounded like she would say anything to get me off the phone! correct me if I'm wrong but smells like BS.

Now 5 weeks for a letter to be posted! deadset, they think we're idiots.

Nothing has shown in my letterbox either Ckraus, I cant believe that a 16 y/o kid can do a 10 minute exam on a computer and walk out with their car license, and it takes over 3 months before you even qualify for a firearms license.

I got the same spiel when I called up a few times, something about how the 6-8 weeks mentioned on the letter does not include the 28 day cooling off period.
