NSW new licence application how long?

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

I think when you talk to the Services NSW staff they just tell you a month or where they think they are up to. When you actually talk to the real Firearms Registry they seem to give you more specific dates.

Highly doubtful? Guess I’m just lucky...
My husband applied the day after me and he is still waiting as well..

My PPL went active on 10/12/19 and last weekend I completed my third match and today I jumped online to apply for a PTA as suggested by the club trainer. He figured the application would sit in the system until the first 6 months were up. Unfortunately as soon as I put my license number in, I get an error message saying not permitted for this license. So now I have to wait until 10th June before submitting my PTA. What a long drawn out process.

Well bugger. I applied for my licence on the 11th November 2019. Still waiting for it to be approved.
I guess it's luck of the draw these days as to when it gets processed...hopefully there's some progress soon for all of us still waiting☺.

I’d say give it about 2 more weeks. By the looks of things they’re doing applications 1 week at a time.

Hey everyone,

Just fired first rounds through my new rifle the other day. This is for a primary production ABC.

- Applied 1st or 2nd of September, pretty much right after doing the safety course and getting my certificate.
- A couple weeks later I got a letter giving me my firearms licence number, which allowed me to check its status online.
- Nothing happened until around the 11th of January where it was then actually referred to service NSW.
- A couple weeks later it was approved and I got a letter saying I had to go to Service NSW to get my photo taken. I did that the day I got it in the mail haha.
- Then I waited another couple weeks until I got my licence in the mail. Probably somewhere around 15 or 20th of Feb.
- Put in my PTA as soon as I got the licence in hand, that took another 35 days roughly. (Cat B Rifle)
- I ordered a rifle and had it delivered to my local dealer. (As you'd imagine this was the fastest part of the process haha!)
- Picked it up a couple days ago and shot a few rounds through it.

So all up, around 6.5 months from application to being able to actually shoot on my property.

I originally just got a rifle for culling some rabbits and foxes that have been destroying the property a bit, but I think I might try and join a club for fun, get me out and socialising haha. So I suppose I'll give you wait times on having additional genuine reasons added soon aswell.

I saw a thread on this forum which basicly reccomened it's better to wait for a licence renewal to add a genuine reason as it can cost the same to reapply.

Not NSW, but word on the street to n WA that there has been close to 1400% increase in new gun sales over the last fortnight with applications quickly approaching 6 month wait territory, but the flood hasn't ended as the majority of new gun buyers haven't got safes yet and all the gun stores have or nearly have sold out. So will be interesting to see what goes down

I spoke to my local store (Sydney) re safes, they said they had a run on safe sales. I managed to pick up the floor stock model as people are concerned given many are made in China that new safes will be hard to come by.

Applied for my licence (cat A and B) on 01-11-2019. Just received notice that it had been referred to Services NSW for processing/issue today. 131 days. Crikey. Now for actual licence and PTA. Looking like a 6 month process from the proficiency test to actually being able to acquire a firearm.

The hard part is over for you. I did my application 20th August refer to rms mid Feb. Did my pta 26th Feb. Should hopefully see it early next month. 7 months and counting.

Beno_1986 & MrsAcko,

What reasons did you put for your A/B applications?

I applied on the 20th Feb online, I'm kinda (cautiously) hoping I get as lucky as you both have. Just wondering whether there's a pattern with some reasons being quicker to assess perhaps.

I hope this is where they are actually up to. Family applied for their Cat H 18th November and rang FAR today and were told that they were STILL processing applications from OCTOBER 2 last year. What the actual f*** are they doing. They've been telling that to some people for what, the last month or two?
Remember, even when those who move you be kings, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice.

Don’t worry, by the looks of things they’re way past October. Your status should change either this week or next. They told me they were doing first week October A week ago but people who applied early November are getting the good news. Let us know how it goes anyway.

My Partners application status changed to refered to service NSW last Sat night. She applied the day after me on 12th November 2019. My application is still waiting approval, so I called the registry and they were really helpful. Basically they said that there are six different offices processing applications to try and catch up, and that anyone who has applied in November will be processed in the next couple of weeks. Although they are not being processed in order due to the different offices getting through them in different time frames due to staff levels at each office varying.
Hopefully people start hearing some good news now they have picked up the pace.

My A/B application reason was recreational hunting/vermin control-with hunting club (SSAA).

On the bright side, it doesn't matter how long FAR take to process applications now and they should have a large reduction in calls checking progress which will help speed things up.

There might be an increase in new license applications though, a lot of people seem to have been calling gun stores and asking how they get one although I'm not sure their 'genuine reason' will be all that genuine.

Woohooo! Applied 12th November, just got the notification to go do the Service NSW photo thing (which I did this morning)

Now we just need this current global health crisis to piss off so my wife can go back to work and then I might still be able to afford to get some guns.
