NSW new licence application how long?

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

I have been waiting nearly 5 months now, I had previously held my junior license for 5 years and this was my transfer over to a full licence, I am disappointed in the fact that previously holding my junior licence for 5 years has no impact on the progress or account for anything towards the new full licence, no idea how much longer this wait will be.

Fellow, I've been waiting almost 14 months.

Their excuse of too many applications during covid's first year is all they'll say.

It might be an interesting exercise for those of you who have been waiting a very long time for a licence to compare notes to determine if there are any similarities between you all. For example, traffic fine history, age, marital status, whether you've applied for hunting or target, etc.

I posted my experience in this thread some months ago. I applied last year and it all came through in a reasonable amount of time. Even got my probationary pistol licence in 42 days. PTA's were pretty quick. The one I put in for a shotgun was approved the next day. Just submitted a PTA last week for a centrefire pistol. Will be interested to see how much time that one takes.

I think the story about number of applications during COVID is BS.

Typical of public service paper shufflers, first in, last out.
New applications get thrown on top of the ones that haven't been done yet, the more that come in above their processing capability,
the deeper down the pile you get. :sarcasm:

Incredible how different the timeframes are. Mine was about 8 months all up from when I applied may last year. Cannot understand how someone can come in and get it all done in 2. If I had some criminal past then it would make sense, but I’ve got nothing.

Yep-mine was ~6 months - no record, no risk, mature aged, work for the state govt.....

Interesting that they have pulled the stats from the FAR page too...

That would be right. I phoned them a couple of times and asked why it was showing average processing times of 70 days when mine was up to 200. I said, wow there must be some fast processing times if the average was 70 and I was waiting 200+

Hi all!

Just thought I'd let you know my experience.

16/3/21 I completes my safety certificate and submitted my application online.

Received letter asking me to attend services nsw for photo (can't recall exact date).

23/4/21 my licence was listed as valid online

27/4/21 received my licence in the mail

I feel extremely lucky to have had my application processed so quickly and I only hope that for all of you waiting you can take this as a sign that they may be slowly sorting their s**t out.
I'd prefer to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Thirteen months since I filed application, correspondence to attend for a mugshot arrived today.
Have been operating on a Vic licence so no biggie apart from no PTAs, keeps temptation to expand the "arsenal" at bay I reckon.

update,
I have been waiting 12 months and recently had to change clubs due to closure of my local shooting club, I was hesitant to do this as I assumed it would push back my application even further, so I bit the bullet and rang Firearms registry and explained my situation and the lady was very helpful and gave me an email address to submit my change of club membership, I sent the email with my new club membership details on Thursday night and received a reply 8am Friday morning saying it was updated to my application.
I kept an eye on my application progress and this morning (Saturday) it was updated to referred to service NSW... Not sure if they just decided to process it since they were updating it or it was just a coincidence?

Submitted application - 10-06-2020
referred to service NSW - 19-06-2021

Hope this helps anyone in the future in regards to wait times.

It probably means that they had to dig through the pile to update the details and since your application was in hand, it got processed.

I had a similar thing happen when travelling overseas to a shooting competition. My B709A, which was required at the time for bringing my firearms back into the country, had not turned up in the mail. I rang to see what was going on as I was a week from departure, the lady I was speaking to dug out my application, processed in then and there and emailed it to me.
Like I said earlier, the "inbox" doesn't get sorted, it's a matter of your paperwork getting done before a bunch more is dumped on top of it. :allegedly:

Turns out some of my cat h delay is my fault. After applying on 7 december last year i was sent an email in february asking for the expiry date of my club membership and have the club confirm it undertakes target shooting. Im arranging that now. Pity the online tool doesnt have an option "awaiting response from applicant"

My whole family have applied for gun license in the past few months. we all applied 2/6/2021

My mother received her letter about attending for photo on the 12/7/2021 so that was super fast from the sounds of others experience.

The rest of us are still waiting for letter but will update when/if received But I have no reason to believe I or anyone else in my family would be refused.

Just passed 28 days, community portal just says "submitted"

Should I be watching for anything to change there? Or will I just get a letter in the mail?

Obviously I'm aware most are waiting 50+ days at the moment.

Cheers

Covid saw a reduction of staff at the NFR by two people one of those was the guy who specialises in dealer B709 forms etc so remaining staff had to take on that work load.
Covid panic saw a dramatic increase on new applications by hundreds if not a couple grand obliviously that’s going to push waiting times back.
The dashboard is updated Wednesday evening , queens bond have their ( back end )system linked in to update stock arrivals from customs for pick up for local dealers.
I’m in the same boat 10 months waiting but also have resigned from being annoyed or frustrated as it’s pointless, just think of the current situation as something similar to a bricklayer placing 5 bricks a day on a house.

The registration process is like watching a time lapse of crabs eating a whale.

Update time, contacted the FR and they found my application.
“ Great ! “
“ You have to expect a 5 month lead time for it to be processed though our new GUNSAFE website, is there anything else I can assist you with?”
“ No thank you”
“ Click”
“FML”.

So I’m expecting a 17 month wait time for a new application.

I'm still waiting since March last year.

I'm a NSW teacher who has already passed criminal checks, so that shouldn't be an issue at all.
