Adding a genuine reason - NSW licence

Post by rookie » 01 Jun 2019, 7:20 pm

Hi guys,

I’m a NSW rec hunter and wanting to add “Target” to the licence. I’ve joined a target club and need to apply to add the a genuine reason to my existing licence online but not sure what option.

On ServiceNSW website you can either reapply (renew) or apply for a fresh application.

Has anyone done this recently??

I would ring them but it’s Saturday night now and was hoping to not wait a couple of days to ring on Monday

One of the guys at the range went through this process and applied late Feb and only just got his Target licence added now - so about a 3 month wait (if anyone was curious).

I didn’t realise it wasn’t obvious where to find the form otherwise I would’ve asked the guy for advice as well

If no one knows I’ll leave a comment once I do find the definitive way to do it.

Cheers,
Mick

Wait for your renewal/"licence reapplication" otherwise you'll pay in full for a new licence.

Thanks heaps ckraus

So, it's basically a new application and you get to choose from the following:

Continuing with the application, you get to review it before doing a final submission ... but if you scroll down the screenshot, the application is $0 ..

.. despite the FAQs saying the application will cost $75 ..

I assume the $75 is to generate a new photo ID card if the application is approved at a later stage?

I may just wait til I can call them on Monday to confirm that I haven't clicked something that I shouldn't have (ie. as the application is $0) ..

Wish they were consistent with their messaging ... "New Genuine Reason" could be read as "[Replace existing reason with a] New Genuine Reason" .. wish they just had "Add Genuine Reason" as the option .. I wasn't sure whether to add my existing Genuine Reason as well just incase.

Just trying to avoid any longer delays .. :unknown:

Spoke to the Range Officer that recently went through the process.

He said he was also confused with the options .. and confirmed that he selected "New genuine reason" when he applied.

He also got his target licence during the week, making it a 12-13 week process (starting in late Feb 2019).

I rang ServiceNSW this morning and spoke to a "Specialist" ... she said that I had to contact NSW FAR for specifics about application requirements.

She put me through and surprisingly it was only a 13 min wait to get through to the FAR.

The lady on the phone confirmed with her colleagues that the option to select was "New genuine reason".

She said just continue with the application even if it's a $0 fee.

I suspect now, that the $75 fee will be to reprint the photo licence later.

Didn't see your comment there *HomeBrew* - my rec hunter licence is valid for many years ..

That's why I wanted to make sure I wasn't replacing my existing genuine reason for a "New genuine reason" ... I was wanting to Add a "New genuine reason".

Re-reading the FAQ ... I think there isn't an option to "replace" an existing genuine reason.

If you wanted to do that, I assume you'd add the new genuine reason then ask to remove the old genuine reason.

If that's the theory, then I'm probably fussing over nothing ..

Will let youse know how it goes

Can I add a genuine reason or firearm category to my licence?

Yes, you can apply to add a genuine reason or firearm category to your existing firearms licence online at Service NSW: http://www.service.nsw.gov.au

To complete the online application you will need:

  • A MyServiceNSW Account linked to the NSW Police Force
  • Supporting documents for your new Genuine Reason or Firearm Category including Special Need (if applicable)
  • A credit card for payment of the fee (if applicable)

The fee to add a genuine reason to your firearms licence is $75, except for the addition of Firearms Collection which is $40. The fee to add a firearm category to your existing firearms licence is $40 for category A,B,C,D,G and $100 for category H.

Adding a genuine reason or firearm category to your licence requires a replacement photo licence card being produced.

Can I remove a genuine reason or firearm category from my licence?

Yes, you can apply to have a genuine reason or firearm category removed from your licence by completing the Delete a Category or Genuine Reason or Cancel a Firearms Licence online form.

The fee to have a genuine reason or firearm category removed from your firearms licence is $75.

Just an update that there is no update :? and it’s been a little over two weeks .. I was hoping adding a genuine reason (not a new category) would be as easy as applying for a PTA timewise.

Looking at the NSW online licence check there is no mention of a pending application.

So, I rang FAR and they said a pending application wouldn’t be online, so totally in the dark as to status or timing with this.

15 Aug 2019 (10.5 weeks) - the online checker was updated overnight (early Thursday morning)!

I now have “TARGET SHOOTING” added. It is on the same line as the REC HUNT and marked as VALID.

Next step will be to await the ServiceNSW photo advice letter ..

During this process no “pending” application was added to the online checker .. so other than the ServiceNSW application you’re pretty much in the dark as to progress.

Gotta assume they treated it as a fresh application with a cooling off period even though my categories haven’t changed.

03/06/2019 - Applied to add new genuine reason
15/08/2019 - 73 days - approved online (a Thursday)
22/08/2019 - 7 days - photo advice received
23/08/2019 - 1 day - photo taken
02/09/2019 - 10 days - photo card received

Total: 91 days (13 weeks)

No updates on FAR online checker except when approved, so in the dark throughout the process.

Er... why not just keep your sport/rec category and choose 'appropriate actuation for target animal' when you want another rifle?

Its worked over a dozen times for me so far.
