Do you need a firearms license for a replacement bolt

Post by beerd » 13 Mar 2014, 10:40 am

Hi all,

Luckily I haven't lost my bolt :D

But it must happen now and then.

Just curious, do you need a firearms license for a replacement bolt?

Bit of a strange question, so you have a rifle, haven't lost the bolt but don't have a licence?

Yes you need a licence to buy or be in possession of any firearm parts

Except the stock...

But yes, any of the barrel, action, bolt etc. is all licensed.

It does.

To one or two guys here too I think? Someone posted a few months ago they had their bolt open for safety while walking back to camp.

Got there and went to breaking everything down for the night and found their bolt missing :(

Left somewhere between them and the hour they walked to get back to camp

Haha, yes except the stock, butt pads etc.

I have bought a barrel from used guns and had it posted to me. No licence required but wouldn't want to get caught with it without a licence

Just had the gunsmith send a form to the registry listing it as a change of caliber

No, nothing to do with me. I'm licensed etc...

I was just asking for curiosity.

Wondered if you could order one over the net cheap or if you needed to go via a dealer etc. I just wondered if it was a big hassle to get them replaced as dealers obviously don't stock tonnes of replacement bolts.

Just wondering, no problem.

I know, Just making a point mate as the forum is public and to someone reading it sounded like you wanted to buy a part and where unlicensed.

It's a major problem if you loose your bolt as anyone who has lost one will find out, a sako owner I won't name lost his on a hunt. Looked everywhere but couldn't find it.

Beretta told him he would have to give them the rifle to be sent to sako in Finland to have a new bolt fitted. No other option. In the end he bought another rifle and kept his old one for spare parts. Luckily his insurance company came to the party and that helped a bit.

I'm sure fir a lot of other rifles you could source a bolt and have a gunsmith headspace the rifle.

Be aware if you try importing one from o/s you will need an import permit for gun parts

In nsw its a B709 form found here

a mate with a collectors licence (in NSW) says that you don't need a lic/permit to purchase glock barrel/slide kits from QLD (receiver needs permit and licence). I've not tried, just repeating what he said, reckons he's done it via post from legit gun stores.

Why do you think most people store their bolts separate from their rifles ? People may take this question the wrong way , the main reason rifles are missing bolts is because they are stolen . Now I'm not saying thats the case but like Chronus said it is a public forum

Dunno about in QLD, but I was told directly from speaking to the Police that in VIC you definitely do need a license for a barrel.
