How often are gun safe inspections in NSW?

Post by mahna » 04 Apr 2014, 2:05 pm

Haven't had my license for long, or an inspection yet...

For the NSW guys who've had their license for a while, how often do gun safe inspections typically get done?

I'm sure it varies, but a rough average? What do you reckon?

It varies quite a bit.

One mate has his checked at least once a year. Another mate had his done four years ago and not since.

At the end of the day if you are doing all the right things it's no hassle, they turn up, usually ask to see your guns and rego papers, shake the safe to check its bolted securely and hand you a certificate

I could be mixing this up with another state, but I think they're *supposed* to be done every 12 months in NSW?

How often they actually get done is another thing...

In Victoria they're apparently done at random.

It was said on here before after a call to the registry that their computer spits out 8 people a day and the fuzz go check 'em out if they have time.

Could be a few months, could be years, some blokes have had their license 10 years or more without an inspection...

Same for NSW perhaps if anyone can confirm?

Yeah not worried about anything, everything is above board for when they do get to around to me.

Just wondering...

I vaguely remember reading the same thing too? I did a search and couldn't find anything in the NSW firearms act however.

I'm sure the police have higher priorities than safe inspections though, so no surprise if they happen late, if at all.

I was thinking of catching a criminal or two, but I've got a speeding ticket on the desk here so I can't really argue with you

No more certificates given out in NSW unless you really want one - instead you get an Event #, well at least that's what happened to me a few weeks ago.

The lovely lady cop who did my inspection said the E# is all that is needed.

What does that get you exactly?

If another cop comes knocking you can give them the # to skip another inspection or... ?

That was me that posted that originally; That's what I got told by a woman at the VIC firearms registry when I enquired about it.

Because it's recorded on the police computer they can check the inspection history (I suppose).

It's probably no different to showing them a piece of paper with an event# on it.

Guess the fuzz have to call the registry when they're at your place doing an inspection to check it.

Wonder if they have to wait 20 minutes like us :x

Depends on where you live and how much of what you have;
If you live in Bondi, yeah, you will get inspected infrequently because there are not that many people who own guns there.
If you live in Goulburn, might take 25 years.

If you have over 20 A/B there was a mandatory inspection campaign a few years ago, to the best of my knowledge it was a complete bust as nobody who made the grade stored their collections poorly. Cat H, you essentially need an inspection these days unless you never plan to buy anything and acquired everything years ago.

I had 1 in 15 years despite moving 3 times. Then I bought a pistol and had 4 in 18 months.

The cops have always made an appointment, with the exception of when my old man's licence expired and I had one of his guns in my safe. They called and said they were coming out immediately to take possession of the gun. 3 cops turned up to pick up a single shot .410.

I've only ever had one in Vic. Bloke just rocked up 830pm on a sat night. Had his list to tick off. Asked if the safe was bolted down. Asked why I wanted big scary black sniper rifles. Done in 5 mins.

I had to arrange an inspection so i could do my pta for a pistol. Biggest issue was getting hold of the local firearms cop to arrange a time. Actual inspection went well. Basically i can keep using the same event number on future pta's unless i change my safe in any way, for example move it.

Gun safes in NSW are inspected when they get around to it , so any time , average every 2 years . Police must comply with NSW Firearms Registry Legislation 19 2 (c) of the act witch means they must call and come to a mutually agreed time with the firearms owner .There are no acceptation's if it is for a gunsafe and firearms audit.

I have had my license since 2014 and I only just this week received a call from the local constable. She was really nice about it. She wanted to do an inspection on Thursday I told her I'm working and she said no problem we'll do it some other time.

I guess another 7 years
