Should I fill in between my safe and the wall?

Post by Hammar » 04 Oct 2021, 3:59 pm

I've got a rifle safe fitted against my garage wall, 2 masonry bolts through the concrete floor and 2 bolts through the brick wall.
The safe is essentially flush to the wall as required but due to the usual irregularities in bricks there is a space between the safe and wall that ranges from 2mm to 7mm wide depending on the height.
To appease the police inspector when they eventually come to inspect it, based on your experiences would it be a good idea to fill this gap as much as possible with some sort of hard plaster or other strong filler? I can't fit a crowbar in the gap at any point (and we know nothing will stop a determined thief anyway) and the safe doesn't budge at all so it's more a precautionary measure.

I think you may have a problem with the floor mounts. FAR regulations stipulate 4 x 90mm x 10mm dia bolts into the concrete. I have this situation and although I have two into the back wall also, it was the floor mounts that the inspector was after, that and the safe being flush with the wall. I would suggest you put and extra set of bolts into the floor.

I just double checked the Level 1 Safe Storage Fact sheet on the NSW Police website, thankfully I actually should be fine:
* When mounted onto brick, stone or concrete, it should be attached by at least four (4) masonry anchors 90mm in
length and 10mm in diameter internally fitted through holes in the rear and/or base of the container, securing it to
the floor and/or wall. The receptacle should be mounted flush with the floor and/or wall

I might put an extra bolt through the floor or back at some point, but right now I should be compliant except maybe the gap at the back.

From what you just said, me thinks you will be ok. It will depend on who inspects the safe, so it may pay to keep that info from FAR close at hand just in case.

Are you bored again you have 4 bolts fitted (pat plod on the head tho if you can say I have 6 fitted all the better but 4 is enough) mine is 3 inch from the wall (there is a radius from the floor to the wall ) tight at bottom never said a word.

The fact that "fitted flush with the floor and wall" is stated twice in the fact sheet might be a clue here. The other part is the "all reasonable steps", this one is where you can get caught out. A 7mm gap is more than enough to get a bar started, I'd get a tube of liquid nails and run a bead around any edge that has gaps.
Working on just doing the minimum is where folks can loose out in the worst case scenario. It all depends on how much you value the contents and what risk you perceive.
