2nd PTA NSW Cat H

Post by lssah501 » 15 Jun 2023, 11:43 am

Posted on Reddit but I’d like to repost here for more clarification from people with relevant experience.
Supposing your 1st PTA was issued and you immediately lodged an application for the 2nd PTA. At this time, there was no firearm registered under your name. The question is would the 2nd application trigger the 28-day waiting period?

Every application triggers a waiting time they just call it processing . Make sure the reason given to acquire is different on each permit .

The reason must be the same. ie if you applied for a Pta you can have the choice of two rimfire/ or rimfire and airpistol etc.
or two centre fire pta's. Either way the genuine reason to lodge a pta in NSW is for target shooting with confirmation from the club you belong to. Your second 6 months would be restricted to the choices listed previously. You can't apply for both centre fire and rimfire (I guess you knew that anyway).
Yes the wheels in FAR do move slowly. Just the way it is .

That's different from Victoria. We can have an air-pistol and a blackpowder pistol, as well as _either_ one rimfire pistol _or_ one centrefire pistol, not both, in our first six months of licence. Being able to own two centrefires makes it a lot easier to get straight into Cowboy up there.

Same as QLD except QLD is 1 year not 6 months.

The whole process of a new shooter to get his pistol licence and not be restricted on the amount of pistols he can purchase is nearly 2 years. About 1 year to get the licence then wait 1 year to not be restricted.

Here it's nine to ten months until you have your first pistols in your hands, then six months after the day you receive your licence you can buy as many as you want. You can lodge your permits before that time and collect your pistols shortly after the six months is up. Mate of mine picked up two yesterday so we're going into the club this morning so he can have a play with them.

Also, it would be prudent to discuss this with you club Secretary.

Say you already had a .308 If you applied for another 308 and gave exactly the same reason it would likely be denied .

A long time ago, I applied for two PTA's at the same time for a Cat B purchase. Both got approved at the same time and I received them in the mail about two weeks later. I bought a Weatherby in 223 and then had the opportunity to obtain a 223 in a Sako. So had obtained two 223's and no questions were asked.
I may have misunderstood the original post. Thought it was referring to Cat H, hence my original reply.

Not many CatH firearms are chambered in .308, but I would think if you were shooting Handgun Silhouette you could probably own two pistols for the job.
