Antique Malay Lantaka - legal status?

Post by Outback » 12 Sep 2024, 4:30 pm

My partner was given a Malay Lantaka (picture attached) by her Father who acquired it in the 1960s when he was a diplomat in Malaysia. It doesn't appear to have been disabled in any way. It's about 20mm bore, bronze muzzle loader with a wick hole at the back end.

We obviously don't intend to fire it, only have it on display as a momento/family heirloom.

Are we breaking the law by having it? If so, what would we need to do to make it legal? Or, if the answer is "it depends" who would be the best person/organisation to get more information from?

Many thanks in advance. Outback.

First question I think is do you hold a firearm licence?
I don't do cannons but I believe they require a firearm licence in Vic at least.
In NSW it seems you require a permit, but I don't see a requirement to hold a licence, though you likely would need one if you ever wished to fire it, even with blank charges.

In QLD if functional it would be a cat A.

According to this 3 second google search for NSW you need a firearms licence, then apply for a prohibited permit. But the cannon must be bigger than a10 bore and made before 1920. Also must be stored as a firearm so build a gun room or you will need a big gun safe.
