Selling some unwanted ammo

Post by jastreb » 28 Aug 2014, 11:17 am

Hi everyone,

Never done this and I just wanted what is the proper legal and this forums process for selling ammo? I have some 30-30 Winchester ammo that I have and will never use and was wondering if its at all possible to sell it? And if so can I just post in the classified section here or I should not do that?

Cheers.

To my best knowledge there's no legal problem with selling it online. Getting it sent anywhere is an issue. And it's your responsibility the check the person you're selling it to has an appropriate licence

You may want to check the new ammunition legislation that was brought in. I have been told that in NSW a licence holder cannot sell or even give ammunition to another shooter. All ammunition sales must go through a dealer.
Please feel free to tell-show me where I'm wrong.

Well I just did a google search and found a number of articles and news stories etc but nothing official. If anybody has a link to it that would be great. I just want to sell this ammo I don't need :)

Here you go.

Firearms Amendment (Ammunition Control) Act 2012 - Link

Who can sell ammunition?
A licensed firearms dealer or a person authorised by a permit to sell ammunition.

Do components of ammunition constitute ammunition?
NO. Components of ammunition do not meet the definition of ammunition provided by section 4 of the Firearms Act 1996:

ammunition includes:
(a) any article consisting of a cartridge case fitted with a primer and a projectile, or
(b) any article consisting of a cartridge case fitted with a primer and containing a propelling charge and a projectile, or
(c) blank cartridges, airgun pellets, training cartridges or gas cartridges, or
(d) any other article prescribed by the regulations for the purposes of this definition. of this definition.

I hold a current firearms licence, so can I sell ammunition to my mate who also has a current firearms licence?
The only licence which authorises the sale of ammunition is a firearms dealer licence.
Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1996 prescribes that a licence issued to a firearms dealer authorises the dealer to "possess, manufacture, convert, purchase, sell transfer, repair, maintain or test any firearm to which the licence applies in the course of carrying on the business of a firearms dealer”. In addition, a firearms dealer is authorised to 'possess, manufacture, purchase or sell ammunition for those firearms'.
