Are you allowed to have armour piercing rounds in NSW?

Questions about New South Wales gun and ammunition laws. NSW Firearms Act 1996.

Are you allowed to have armour piercing rounds in NSW?

Post by pucker » 29 Oct 2014, 7:41 am

Thinking of milsurp ammo here.

Closest thing I can find to an answer on the customs site is this, it goes on about importing normal ammo and permits blah blah then says.

Please Note
The above information does not apply to specialised ammunition (and components) such as the following:
• Armour piercing
• blah blah blah...
To import these types of ammunition, written permission to import must be obtained from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department prior to importation.

So doesn't rule it out? Legal?

Just curious, not planning an armoured car heist or anything

Um no !You would need an AG permit to import and to own, and I'm pretty sure civilians wont get that. But you could always write the AG, lol Im sure will be on some list by the end of that day mate.

Most of the goodies that are banned are banned by stating that its subject the the AG approval...

So the short answer is no. They are dangerous

I bought a case of 7.62x39 many years ago when I picked up a new SKS. The ammo was in a can similar to spam and had to use a key type arrangement to tear the seal around it to open. I think it contained 750 rounds from memory and all were black tipped armour piercing which made for some fun shooting some old cars up the farm. Unfortunately the last round was fired well over 20 years ago which is probably a good thing. I personally don't see any need for this type of ammo in civilian use apart from having some fun shooting steel plates or engine blocks. Having said that, I'd love a couple thousand rounds of 50Cal RUAG just for fun :)

Add some zinc to the lead next time you cast boolits, and you have your AP ammo. Its what big game hunters used to do in Africa to pen the hides of Rhinos and heffalumps.
