Safe location near window

Post by Point223 » 22 Dec 2014, 2:13 pm

Ok here goes..

Just moved houses.. I have placed my safe near a window.. it's not visible from outside but it's near a window through which you can see the backyard. I have high fences so neighbours can't look through.

Do you think it would pass inspection or do i have to relocate it?

Treat the law like your gun, it's AWAYS loaded, better to be safe than sorry.

If you can, ring your local DFO he's the one that decides if you're obeying the legislation.
There's always room for at least one more gun in my safe.

Mine is the same. Next to a window in the corner of the room on the back side of the house but not visible to the public. You'd have to have trespassed over the fence and be looking in the window to see it.

No mention made of it during inspection.

Got blinds you can close?

From the sounds though I can't see there being a problem.

"Take all reasonable precautions" is what's required right? Houses have windows... You're not reasonably expected to black the place out to hide a safe.

I must had read the NSW storage requirements and bits of the Act 100 times and I can't remember ever reading anything to suggest it would be a problem.

As above, reasonable precautions is what's expected off you.

If the safe was front and centre, living room window looking out onto the street then they'd probably have some harsh words for you, but not for this.

Mines in a room at the side of the house which you could walk past.

Has a privacy screen over the window, you can't see fine detail but you can see the silhouette of things including my safe which is in there.

Also no mention of it being a problem when I was inspected.

Sounds fine to me.

Grated's got it. Houses have windows... Some safes will be near them.

If you think about it, how many people are going to have a safe in a room with no windows in their house?

Bugger all.

Thanks for the replies guys.

A person will have to tresspass to my backyard and even then they must come closer to the window and cup both hands on the window and look to the side to see it.

High fences ensure that neighbours can't look over at my windows either unless they tresspass. I have blinds and they're mostly drawn unless we are at home.

You're over thinking it I reckon, just bolt the bastard down good and proper and I'm sure it will be fine, if your really worried about people being able to see it and recognise it as a firearms safe, throw a blanket over it!

For what its worth mine was near a window and front door in my old house, no issues at all there.

1-just go get yourself some good and proper curtain or blind 2- make sure the the window is secure. 3- make the room off limits to visitors. 4- booby trap the door with tear gas...nvm that. lol

I have moved house recently an changed the storage place of my safe, all i did was ring the firearms branch an changed where my safe was located. As far as i know if they have the correct place of your safe on records it should be fine. I even asked a few questions which they were happy to help with. :D

You mean the address where it is located?

Or you had to tell them where it's specifically located in your house? :huh

Where it is specifically located in house :)

E.g. in house bolted to cement floor or in garage bolted to cement and wall etc

Geez they're anal about the details then.

Don't move it from one side of the room to the other without telling them

They don't ask you to give details where the safe is located in the house. They need details of address if the owner of the firearm moves places only.
