Transport of Firearms in NSW

Recently bought a Ute with not lockable storage (searching for lockable lid or canopy or box, still undecided).

Am I reading this correctly?

So i can do whatever I want? As long as:

"NOTE: At no time should a firearm be left stored unattended in a motor vehicle
unless the firearms are stored in accordance with the requirements of category
C, D & H firearms and no other alternative safe storage is available."

Can SUV/4WD/Ute owners comment on how they transport their WMD?

Having recently traded the Commodore for a Ford Ranger dual cab I've had to rethink how I carry the bigger rifles. Regular rifles I trigger lock, bag and place on the floor in the rear of the cab, pistols get a trigger lock and locked box for transport. Luckily the big stuff comes in a pelican case so I fit 2 padlocks (40mm) then I have a 4m length of wire security rope (Bunnings) which in thread through the handles of the cases and secure with padlocks to the bed of the rear tub. The tub cover locks if you can call it that but it's all about taking reasonable precautions to secure the firearms, padlocks and chains would probably pass as reasonable. Ammo of course stored separately in a locked container, I use the MTM 50Cal Ammo Cans with a pair of 40mm padlocks. Bunnings do a 4 pack of the 40mm padlocks so you can lock the ammo and Pelican case with just the 1 key.

I use a locked aluminium tool box bolted on to my tray back single cab as there's absolutely zero cab space.

Whilst the legislation does not tell you how to transport Cat A&B firearms, the overriding requirement is that “Any person in possession of a firearm must take all reasonable precautions to ensure the firearm is kept safely, is not lost or stolen and does not come into the possession of an unauthorised person.”

The Commissioner has determined that 'all reasonable precautions' have been met if category A & B firearms are conveyed in the same manner as category C, D & H firearms.

Category C, D & H firearms must be conveyed unloaded, with the ammunition kept in a locked container separate from the firearms. They must be rendered temporarily incapable of being fired (e.g. by removal of the bolt/firing mechanism or the use of trigger locks) or must be kept in a locked container that is properly secured to, or is within the vehicle.

On a long trip I will have the rifles in a locked hard case with bolts removed and the hard case will be cable locked to the SUV. Bolts are locked in the ammo case. Throw a blanket over the lot and that’s about all I can do short of bolting the case to the car. A short trip to the range will involve soft cases, bolts removed and locked in the ammo box with a blanket over all my gear.

Add to that some other laws involving public menace, aggravated possession, armed in public, causing fear, being intoxicated, and potentially, breaking the road rules can all effect how "secure" your firearms might be considered to be. In some states even "associating" with certain people can be illegal, I don't how that might be affected if you had a firearm in your vehicle while doing so though.

Basically, it's entirely in your own interests to go way overboard on this when we live in a Police state - in my opinion.

BFS, that's okay until you pull up at a servo to fuel up and someone sees them sitting on the seat, knows what they are and calls the police. N.S.W coppers believe that if they can be seen through the window, they are not secured. I know of a couple of occasions where blokes have lost their licence and guns for doing this. Even had one young local pulled over for a traffic infringement, police saw a magazine in the console with a round in it, (.22 L.R) and he was charged with having an unsecured "loaded" firearm.
Right or wrong why risk it? I travel all over the country shooting and my firearms travel in locked cases/box secured to the tray of the ute. I've got too much invested to risk losing them.

I'm not a lawyer and the regs are ( in my opinion ) more often than not, designed to create 'loopholes of punishment' ....

In N.S.W, is travelling with a category A/B in a factory supplied hard case TOGETHER with ammo in lockable hard case, in the boot of a sedan .... meeting the regulations ?

Just throw a blanket over em mate, this s**t ain't rocket science ya know If I know I'm going on a long trip I bolt a box to the ute and throw em in there but for short trips I do as I mentioned and occasionally I have had to call into a servo with em on the back seat but as I said I cover stuff up so it's not obvious as to what it is.

And don't get caught with ammo floating around on ya floor either, they've been known to ping people for that too so make sure ya got your ammo stored correctly after a night of spotlighting.

You get it. It's just a bit of common sense I find, doesn't have to be some drama filled exercise FFS or should we be employing Security Guards to accompany us when we are out and about just in case?

It's very easy mate. Think of your guns as something very expensive that may be impossible for you to replace. Think of them as something that criminals WANT to steal.

I remember in the ol days when I used to have em sitting on a rack in the cab of my 4by or just sitting across my dash and ammo on the floor or in the glovebox, they were the days where we weren't required to be fearful of everything and anything, sad to see em gone, now we have to be paranoid about everything and anything we do.

Yeah used to take my rifles on the train when I went to Sydney to get work done on em at Mick Smiths, do it now and the riot squad or whoever would be all over ya, flat out being allowed to carry a plastic knife and fork these days without someone accusing of planning a mass murder or something
