How Long Have I Got?

Post by Wm.Traynor » 09 Jul 2025, 7:17 pm

I have not shot all year and recently received the unwelcome news that I have cataracts in both eyes. Unfortunately I will have to wait nearly a year before my health insurance will allow me to claim for the operations, etc. A year is their waiting period.
What will the cops think of this period, say 18months plus recovery time, of my being inactive? At the back of my mind there is the idea that if I have not shot for a certain period of time, they will stop me from shooting somehow.
I don't know if they will simply make me hand them in, or whatever.
What does the forum say?

Do you have to do mandatory club shoots?
I would just go shooting anyway, have some fun even if you're not getting bullsyes.
I first discovered I had a cataract developing in my right eye in 2022. I started doing open sight practice and couldn't see the front sights on my rifles. It has deteriorated significantly over the past four years, for shooting, but still is not effecting my daily life at all. I'm about due to get it looked at again but I think it's still at the point that the surgeon won't do surgery yet. He says it's virtually guaranteed that I will have to wear glasses after the surgery, whereas I only need reading glasses for fine text currently.

Do you have any rifles with aperture sights? Apertures make a profound difference for me in making the sights very clear.

No mandatory shoots for Cat A/B, take a year, take 20 years, no probs. As for shooting you could (maybe should) learn to shoot left handed. if you also have Cat H either shoot across your eye (I shoot right handed but left eye dominant) or apply for a medical exemption for attendance for 12 months.

Make bigger targets. Make the bullseye about a meter wide. And just make sure you are facing the right way.

Just get a collector licence and transfer your guns to that licence for the purpose of the study, preservation and collection.

You only have to store them with a trigger lock on them to make them temporally inoperable.

I've had both of mine done. (one at a time)
The first one was my shooting eye, and just before the op it was that bad that I couldn't see the reticle in the scope.

Had both done,,, with excellent results.
Crystal clear vision, and colors were all fantastic.

My eye surgeon said "I MAY have to wear glasses afterwards"
As it turned out I didn't need glasses at all. (back then) but need driving glasses now,,,,, due to old age.

Everybody is different, there are no "one size fits all" rules when it comes to cataracts.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

Basically, you can get implant lenses for close vision, near vision, or fancy ones that do both.
If you have to choose a fixed option, would you want glasses for distance or for reading? (Target or sights)?
Discuss this with the eye surgeon in advance.
