hello gents and ladies

Today as I had a friend and his partener the range while we were there he mentioned that he had an old air rifle given to him by his father. partener and himself said that they don't really want it in their house as they have 2 small children. my mate said if I want I can have it if i life. What would be the legal way of putting it on my licence or should I just tell him to hand it in. I'm from qld btw.

Is he licenced, I take it that he is not. Hard as this may sound, but if you don't want it, leave it up to your mate to depose of it. If you do want it, have your mate take it to a dealer to have put on their books, no questions are asked. Get him to do it, as he will be very unlucky to get more than a slap on the wrist if caught and charged, where as, on the other hand, if you were to take it to the dealer yourself, and are caught, you could face a fine of up to $14K +, and probable loss of FA licence. Then you can get a PTA and have it transferred to your licence.

to be honest i might just get him to destroy it or hand it into the local cop shop as it is probably in very poor shape. i've never seen it or even heard about it until i took him to the range. Not worth the risk

Don't touch the thing yourself until it's on the books. If you're found with it you'll feel the heat.

Have him take it to the dealer and once it's in on the books have it transferred to you. He should surrender it to a dealer anyway if he wanted to dispose of it so it's really the same to transfer it to you.

Don't take it to the cops. Take it to a gun dealer and let them deal with it.

Is his father dead or alive? As in did his dad have it illegally and give it to him or did it show up when he died?

As an addition....call the dealer before you leave home and tell them you're coming to hand in what you believe is an unregistered air-rifle. If by some off chance a copper stops the car and finds the air-rifle you or they are covered providing the most direct route to the shop is being taken. Ask the dealer to value it as well, could be some rare antique and worth some coins or maybe just a piece of junk.

As hes a mate tell HIM how to dispose of it by ringing lgs and explaining where and when he got it ( found in the loft of Dads house last week is always good ) dad passed away or went to nursing home ,they will advise him from there as others have said dont you cart it round, if police stop you a lot of explaining if you get a human cop you would be ok but your in Qld dont risk it .

Just to put into perspective how screwed the system is, at least in Victoria, if you did take that old rusty crappy airgun that the neighbour gave you 'cause he had no use for it and wanted it gone', and you're found in possession of it - you'll be subject to potentially a fine, for a first offence, of about $18,200.40!!! or 2 years imprisonment; for a second or subsequent offence, $182,004 penalty units or 10 years imprisonment.

So, its never just an old air gun, unfortunately, its a huge can of worms, or a big barrel of nuclear waste that you dont want to go near.... even though there are probably very few if ANY nations that regulate such airgun...

Australia has Maxamum penaltys for every thing, but gun owners who cop a minimum.
