Buying a rifle/handgun interstate

I live in Brisbane at the moment but might have a new job in Tweed heads and will be living there for I don't know who long as well.

So will have to change my gun license,car rego,and drivers licnece from Qld to NSW

But what about if I want to buy a new rifle/handgun?

Can I buy it in Qld as the closest shop will be Surfers Paradise I think or drive 3+ Hrs to Lismore?

Any help would be great

Once you are approved to buy a gun, you can buy it from any state, except wa I think. You can always buy a gun and get it posted to your closest dealer.

Not quite your same situation but hopefully helpful...

A mate of mine moved from NSW to Victoria a few years ago and the law in Vic was you could drive on any interstate license for 3 months. but if you were staying in the state longer than that you had to change your drivers license over to a Vic one. He just went to their RTA and they swapped it, no new test or anything like that.

Probably a similar situation going from QLD to NSW...

Looking for this I found the same for QLD and Victoria. They all say if you're moving in or out you need to transfer your license to the destination state.

I'm trying to buy my first firearm and there's one on usedguns. I'm not sure what to do. Do I pay the private seller then hope he sends it. Do I pay into his account. Does he pay postage or do I pay.

How much is it to post and pay for transfer of ownership.

You have to get it sent to a dealer in NSW, and it usually involves the seller getting it to their dealer to send it on. Dealer to dealer is no hassle. As for payment, you have to sort that out with the seller. Unless they advertise as including post, it will be extra. Anywhere from $20-50. Some dealers will also charge a fee, can be up to $60. There has to be trust between the parties involved. So far I have had no troubles ( money-wise ) over many purchases, touch wood!!!
I have had some quality issues however, my idea of "good condition" is different to a couple of blokes I have dealt with.
If in doubt, organise to get it taken to the sellers nearest gunshop and get them to inspect it and deal through them. Expect a fee.

I'm very particular about my stuff, one little scratch and I get turned off and sell it or give it away.

I did email the seller and he says he didn't even put the bolt in but he did put a Leopold VX 1 scope on and it has a bag. It was advertised for $1100 and I offered $800 he said the gun owes him $900

Personally, for such a common rifle you would be better off to source it locally. By the time you add in postage and fees your savings will be minimal. Myself i would only buy interstate if it was something rare or special. Also , if something goes wrong, you tend to get looked after by your LGS much better if you purchased from there.

Okay, had a look at the link to the rifle in question. Face value , looks like a good deal. That's a $400+ scope. Have to agree with Supaduke though. If it was rare or super cheap it may be worth it. By the time you add transfers and postage you will be around new price anyway. Perhaps you could print it off and take it into your local gunshop and see if they can put a similar package together for the money. Take cash, it does still work sometimes. You will find that they will be more willing to help a new shooter with any teething problems if you bought the rifle off them to start with.

Your right guys, Bing a first time gun buyer I think it's good to get a good relationship with a LGS and if something does happen to the rifle then I can always take it back.

Also don,t forget when they get the firearm here in nsw it has to be added to the register and sometime that can add some time and its not just a transfer fee some gun shops add and INTERSTATE FEE then the transfer fee
Go local and get to know local shop.

Don't forget to think about importing.

If you don't mind a trip to the airport (and dealing with international sellers) you can save a heap.

I don't think any state charges for import permit applications.
