I have been starting to get some very positive responses from the 93 sitting MP’s across Queensland.
This one is from the state member of Morayfied, Mark Ryan.
It is very calm, measured and sensible.
“ Thank you for your email and for taking time to contact my office. My apologies for my late reply.
Firstly, I wanted to express my genuine concerns following the terrible tragedy last week at Bondi. Like many across the nation, I am devastated by the evil inflicted on our fellow citizens, solely because of their religious beliefs and practices. It is truly heartbreaking.
Secondly, while there is lots of chatter, there are currently no proposals by the Queensland Government in respect of changes to the Weapons Act (QLD) or the Weapons Regulation (QLD). However, should any proposals be raised by the Queensland Government, then I would expect that those proposed law changes would be subject to good and thorough consultation and examination. That being said, there is a question to be raised about the transparency of Queensland Government in respect of their intentions for legislative change: on one hand they say that nothing is changing, but then on the other hand they say that reviews are in fact underway in relation to, for instance, the coronial recommendations of the Wieambilla Tragedy and recent news reports which identified issues regarding the ability of Weapons Licensing Branch to suspend or cancel a Weapons Licence for extremists views (among other things). In addition, on one day you have the Queensland Deputy Premier saying the Queensland Government will introduce firearms caps, then the next day a government spokesperson says it’s not happening (yet?). It is my view that the Queensland Government needs to be upfront with its intentions: what is currently under review and what is being proposed. We can then all have views about what should and shouldn’t change; but it is most important for the Queensland Government to be clear about its intentions, so Queenslanders can have their say.
Finally, I think there are some matters which nonetheless should be further explored to see if responsible legislative change can be made. For example, I think it is prudent to consider restricting firearm ownership/licencing to Australian citizens. There is probably also a good argument to review how the Firearms Prohibition Orders framework operates to ensure that the extremist ideologies of, say, family members residing with firearm owners can be taken into account. In this regard, I’d be interested in hearing your views.
In any event, please keep in touch. I always welcome feedback and suggestions from local residents. In addition, as the Patron of the Murrumba Pistol Club for more than 15 years, I regularly receive feedback/suggestions from firearms owners: so I am very aware of the many matters important to you and other law-abiding firearms owners.
Best wishes to you and your family and friends for the Christmas and New Year period”
