If you could have a full-auto rifle, would you want one?

Questions about Queensland gun and ammunition laws. QLD Weapons Act 1990.

If you could have a full-auto rifle, would you want one?

Post by salate » 24 Jan 2014, 10:39 am

Hi guys,

I know this is a tender subject, I'm not looking to start a flame war over the laws or our rights (or lack thereof), I'm just curious to peoples personal situations and if/what they'd want if we have more relaxed laws on full-auto rifles.

If you could have a full-auto rifle, would you actually want one?

Whether for culling pests, or just for fun, why would you want it and what would you want?

I've shot my share and personally they don't do all that much for me.

A fun experience as a once off for sure, but I wouldn't rush out and buy one if they were legalised.

I'd take something like an M39 EMR and an R15 if I could have one. Semi-auto would do me fine though.

Yep, just because I wanted one, the only reason needed really.

I would probably go the auto version of the SLR

if i had a chance to shoot one i would but i wouldn't own one. no practical use for a full auto. a semi is a different kettle of fish, good for target shooting and for hunting

Might get bored of it but as a LAFO I'd like the option.

Did the military thing for 16+ years. Worked on and fired everything from 9mm to mini guns. Fun for the first belt, after that it is just function testing.
Controlled power is everything. Shoulder fired full auto is anything but controlled. I would like a semi auto for my hunting though. I still have a soft spot for the L1A1SLR.

Agreed, I just finished over half a decade in the army, full auto although fun to spray at a tree occasionally is pretty useless especially if you choose to go from the hip watched a guy try that didn't hit anything but dirt, some of it as little as 3m away. Having said all that semi auto would be great I would prefer one of the AR variants or full auto the mag 58 is both reasonably accurate and fun.

When I was a young bloke I watched a great uncle walk a magazine worth of fire from a bren into a 44 at 50m firing from the hip(it was either two or three bursts to empty), mind you he had real life experience at it..........

My dad has a range of full autos back home overseas. From pistols to ak47's. I enjoy shooting them when I am over there but I wouldn't get one here even if it were legal. I would be happy with a semi auto rifle and shotgun.

Yep walking onto a target will work in short bursts. That is how machine gunners are taught to shoot as you can hit a target consistently. Holding down the trigger of a belt fed MG is what we were referring to in the above posts. The Bren is a great weapon.

Probably not as I wouldn't really have the need for one.

As a LAFO I'd like the option though.

I'd definitely have a semi-auto also. Everyone needs a semi-auto .22 ;)

Interesting question. I've never given thought to it since it's so taboo. I have held and fired an M4 when I was in the military many moons ago, but we were not permitted to fire in full auto at that range.
That being said, I'd probably choose an FN F2000. But that's because I really don't know of many other options.

My buddy (from a free state) has the civilian version of that gun, the FS2000. I have to say, I didn't like it in pictures, but loved it in person. He also has a FN P90 which is ugly both in pictures and in person. But my fav would be the Tavor (something else I can't have). I like anything that takes standard AR mags. But I don't think they make a full auto version of that.

On the subject of civilian versions...

Full-auto's are largely prohibited across the US as I understand it?

But they can make a semi-auto version of any full-auto/select fire military rifle and you can have them, is that right?

Yes, but not in all states. For instance, the civilian version of the FN FS2000 would be banned in states like NY, NJ (ok with restrictions on mag rds), CT, CA but allows for purchase in the rest.

Yes for all intents and purposes. If you want to own a full auto rifle, you have quite a few hoops to jump through and Obama just made it impossible with his recent executive decision to not permit the use of a "Trust" to purchase a full auto rifle.

Since the new executive order is still not worked out yet I will post a link that describes the process as it stands today. But understand that this is changing as we speak because Obama wets himself at the mere sight of a gun (unless they are with his bodyguards).

I have always wanted an AUG A3, but I doubt I would ever use full auto, semi would suit me fine.

Yeah they do make the Tavor in full auto, it is the Israeli assault rifle for their infantry, it has select fire for semi and full auto. Whether or not you could get one in the states might be the more pertinent question though.

Wasn't John Howard over there pitching his gun laws as a reform for the US?

Yes, they did a NY Time article about his visit that got a lot of press

Yes, certainly the direction we are heading.

If it weren't for the rear, right side ejection port it would be perfect. That of course making it a less than ideal ambidextrous rifle.
However, for my purposes it would serve just fine.
