Storing ammo in clips/speedloaders

Post by fenderstrat » 12 Jan 2020, 12:07 pm

Hi everyone, I regularly shoot in combined services matches with military pistols and rifles, and I usually use clips/charges for rifles and speedloaders for revolvers. I know (or was told anyway) that you're not supposed to store ammo in magazines, as magazines are supposed to be part of the firearm (for example, keep an SMLE mag topped up in my ammo compartment).
My question is: can you keep ammo stored in charger clips, or even speedloaders? I know some military ammo used to come in clips inside of bandoleers. I'm just curious to know if anyone stores their ammo that way, or if its even allowed.
Cheers!

Any answer here is likely to be a guess or speculation or just people saying what they do but have never been checked.
This is a case where you really need to send an email to Weapons Licensing and see if you can get a formal response, If it's allowed then you should keep a copy of that with you in case you get a safe inspection or stopped by the police.

Do let us know what they say when/if they eventually answer though.

G'day fenderstrat,
An interesting question for your State, here in Vic it is legal, I keep a comps worth of 6.5 & 8mm in clips, as well as 2 lots of speedloaders, 1 x 357 and 1 x 45. A little while ago gunshops were selling Turkish 8mm in cloth bandoliers that was all in clips, Cheers.
PS: I have been inspected 2x without any comment on storage.

They inspected your ammunition storage?

G'day Jim Tom,
Good post, answers fenderstrats question regarding your States requirements. Must say they far exceed ours in stipulating exact packaging needs whereas we are only told how to store, and even that is not concise. Very interesting to see your State defines primers as ammo also. Cheers.

Its the only state that a primary producer can own and carry a pistol. It does have other restrictions that limit the general use of firearms in crown land for example. that would effect more people than the other way around though I am sure.

Yeah mate. All that crown land locked up is just infested with dogs, cats, pigs, deer, brumbies etc. There was a petition lobbying the government to trial public access for hunting however PalaceChook and her s**t Labour government thought better of it.
