Who Can Provide A Medical Certificate

Post by bwm85 » 03 Sep 2020, 12:01 pm

G'Day Everyone,

I'm just going through the process of obtaining a A/B licence and am required to provide a medical certificate as I have declared that I previously sought treatment for my mental health. My question is: Who can provide the certificate? My treating psychiatrist is under the impression that he is not qualified to make the assessment, where other people say you can just go to your GP.

There is no complexity to my medical history and certainly nothing the would make be an issue with owning or operating a fire arm. I am a commercial pilot by trade and CASA are aware of my medical history and they re-issued my medical.

I have contacted weapons licensing by email, but received an email stating that it could be 28 days before they reply.

Hope someone might have an answer.

Cheers

I should add, I have since talked to weapons licensing by phone and they confirmed it’s just has to be a qualified practitioner whom is familiar with your condition.

Has anyone had any trouble just seeing their GP? That is, have you been required to see someone more specialised. My GP charges fairly for treatment, the last report my psychiatric prepared was $780(!!!) therefore I’d prefer to see my GP.

GP letter will be fine - setting how long he has treated you, what for, current situation and that he believes / does not believe owning a firearm would be problematic.

Make sure it contains the magic phrase:

His/Her condition does not affect his/her ability to possess or use a weapon/firearm.

Maybe front up at Dr with "suggested" wording for the letter.

What you need to know is, is he anti gun.

You ideally need a doctor that has known you for a while and is friendly with you. As a general rule doctors are anti gun. My doctor told me this I got him to sign the identity part of my license. Unfortunately we have had a pretty regular meeting schedule for many years for a large range of things.

That was the wording I found on the WL site .... somewhere. If you dig around some of the advice for medical practitioners, you can find it.

Edit: And yes OB, that's a good idea. They can insert their blurb in where appropriate.

Just make sure you check it first before applying. Mine had some extra crap that referred to someone else. Doctors (receptionists) make mistakes.

I applied on the 21st of July and got my licence approval email just yesterday 16/09/2020 I had to get a medical certificate and I just got one from my regular GP. Hes been treating me through medication for anxiety for 4+ years and all I needed was a certificate stating that my mental health will not affect me owning/shooting firearms and he also added "feel free to contact me at any time if necessary". So to make the answer short Yes your GP is fine as long as they have known you/treated you for quite a while. Hope this info helps. Oh he also added in the fact that he has seen good progress in my mental state over the years.

Well that's good news. Seems the system can work well, at least sometimes.
