7:35pm Sunday night 29th July email of confirmed submission of PTA application.

2:33pm Wednesday 1st August email of approval of PTA submission.

At first I thought there must have been a problem. But no. I must say a big thank you to QLD WLB. Job well done guys.

In the past few years, I was pretty impressed by the speed of PTA approvals in sunny Qld.

BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They blotted their copy book this time.

With not a single change to my address, reasons for need, conditions, license, or anything else that I can think of,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

it took 3 months, and a phone call to my local MP to get approval for a .22rf/.410g u/o combo.

During the wait I rang WLB to inquire why it was taking so long on a number of occasions.

The following reasons (in order) were expressed to me;

1) Your PTA is waiting to be approved by the end of the week,
2) Your PTA has been processed and awaits final approval,
3) Your PTA will be addressed in the next day or so, keep an eye on your mailbox for the approval,
4) Every application is treated case by case,
5) We are still waiting on documents from another agency, ( :wtf: ) ,,,,,,,,, FBI maybe ? :unknown:

6) I rang my local MP asking if he could look into this for me.

7) Email recieved advising that my PTA has been approved.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Wow DJ, that’s a bit of a horror story. And I thought I was hard done by with a three week wait. Sometimes I guess you’re at the mercy of “the system “

I'm thinking that they must have had a bit of a tune up.
Approvals are now (almost) within the day, which is as the Regulations require.
Maybe they've got a few staff dedicated to a quick turnaround as soon as they come in, and the rest of the staff are playing catchup with the "old" applications?
If it continues as it now is, we should be thankful.

I've put in 2 PTA's recently, one for a Cat A 17HMR and a Cat B 12g lever action. Both are approved but in the email it states that "PTA will be approved on xx/09/2018. The last 3 PTA's I applied for were approved and PTA was sent to dealer within 3 days. Has the PTA process changed?
According to the QPS website,
The waiting period is twenty-eight (28) days after the day the applicant lodges the application for the Permit to Acquire unless the applicant already holds a firearm under a licence or the Authorised Officer is satisfied there are exceptional circumstances.

I have 2 centrefire and a rimfire rifle already. Seems strange that I need to wait longer?

This happened to me late last year.
The reasons given me by Wlb were varied and in some cases.very entertaining but none could explain for sure why it happened!!

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe the 28 day period gets applied to all PTA's and it's up to the officer to "remove" it based on you having a firearm already?

I will give them a call tomorrow and post the results. :P

As suspected whoever did my last 2 PTA's (they were a week apart) hadn't removed the 28 day period. Guy I spoke to at WLB was very helpful. Should come thru tomorrow or Monday. :D

I applied PTA for 0.223 under dealer license A.
After this PTA approved can I use this PTA to buy firearms through dealer B?
Should I notify the WLB about the change?

Very happy with QLD weapons branch in regards to PTA turn around time. I put in a PTW for a 12Guage break action on Tuesday 25th of Sep at 11.00AM and received approval on the 27th of Sep at 5.00PM.

The only issue I have had was that I could not source the shotty I wanted up in QLD. I had to order it from a LGS in Victoria and have it posted up to a LGS in Brisbane which cost me $45 for postage and LGS in Brisbane are charging me $50 to complete the transfer paperwork.

Even then it works out cheaper than if the LGS's in QLD had that shotty.

After having my licence and first PTA approved on the 27th of Sept. I applied for another PTA on Oct. 2nd. Got the email today - approved but not available until 31st of Oct. So it looks like I've also been caught out by their incompetence. I'm starting to see why so many ppl are pissed at these public servants.

At the risk of being pedantic, I'll attempt to interpret your circumstance.

1 - Your first PTA was approved on Sep 27. You only say approved; have you received it and used it i.e. had the firearm brokered to your possession?
2 - You applied for a subsequent PTA five days later. Email indicating approval but not yet issued, for the reason that WLB stated.

Until you have had the first firearm brokered to your possession, WLB has nothing in their system to indicate that you already "hold a firearm under a licence". Until that happens, the waiting period is 28days, as required by the regulation.
If WLB does have a record of your ownership then "However, the period is the remainder of the day on which the applicant lodged the application for the permit, if the applicant already holds a firearm under a licence".

Thanks for the info.... The PTA has been faxed to the dealer. It wasn't that I've not read these things, it seems that I've misinterpreted the meaning of '...holds a firearm under licence...' with the word 'holds' not being clear to me as meaning pysical possession. And without knowing the reason behind this, It would seem illogical that if you're already approved why would physical possession be required to exonerate another 28 day wait? So if I now read this right, after I pick up first one on Friday, Ill give them a call and see if they can amend. If not then I'll just apply for another PTA and trash the other.

WLB will not be aware of you "holding under a licence" until the dealer has returned their paperwork to WLB and that info' has been processed into the system. Yes true. However this was just frustration (my fault as it turns out), due to now having to make two 700km round trips to the dealer.
I spoke with WLB today and they are happy to remove the restriction as soon as the dealer submits the paper work later today.

Thanks for your input, I'm sure someone else new to the sport will find this exchange useful in the future.
