Years and still no police check

Post by veep » 26 Aug 2014, 8:33 am

Doesn't bother me but am just curious.

It must be about 2.5 years now since I got my shooters license and started storing firearms. No sign of a police check yet... Normal?

Everything's up to scratch of course for when/if it happens.

Or maybe someone forgot to file my piece of paper?

I had my Gun Safe inspected at my request because I was getting a Category C Licence before I purchased anything. Have not had an inspection since, now licence renewal time after 5 years.

Don't worry about it.

I had my licence for about 2-2.5 years with no inspection. Got inspected after I moved house. I kind of expected to get checked again when I got my H class but so far nothing

For mine I got a phone call asking to set a date for them to come around and check it. FAR has all your contact details so I don't think they'd just show up hoping you were home

In NSW and I suspect all other states, the Police are not permitted to just drop in and check unless they have a warrant to do so. This would only happen if you had done something wrong. ie domestic violence order or the like.

I have been checked a number of times over the years but I do have a lot of firearms, I buy and sell a fair bit and have a C class license. It is those kind of things that prompt the powers that be to want have a look at you and check things are okay. If you are under the radar, you may never be checked.

Don't worry about it! if you have your firearms correctly stored and things are good, you have nothing to fear and the Police will always make an appointment before they come. Believe it or not, the Police are on your side, unless you are a crook. Further, if you are concerned, why not walk into your local Police Station, introduce yourself and ask a few questions. You might get a pleasant surprise.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

Had mine 35 years and never checked! Gotta be just a matter of time though.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

I don't know what the process is in other states but I was told by a woman at VIC licensing and registrations that their systems randomly pick 8 license holders each day for inspection.

There's a few hundred thousands license holders? (or however many, I just made that number up).

Waiting randomly to be picked out of an enormous hat like that you could foreseeably never get an inspection I guess.

Between half a dozen mates of mine that shoot I think only 1 of us has had an inspection in the last 2-3 years.

A local guy here went away on the weekend, and some pricks angle ground there way into his gun safe, so I expect the local lads will think they need to be seen doing something soon I'm guessing.

Any idea what the recovery rate for these things is?

Do the fuzz publish those kind of figures?
