Theives often strike when you are out, after casing your joint for awhile. They don't want to end up buried under 2m of creek gravel as yabbie feed by having their identity known.
They also provide video of people, number plates, faces, anything that helps you find out who they are.

Question is, do you want a security system to satisfy a law, or something that more useful?

That's the problem, CCTV doesn't meet the more than 15 guns clause in Vic, so there's no flexibility. For instance, CCTV can be used without an alarm system from 20 to 34 guns (under 30 Cat H) in SA.

Nah, that's cool. Ours has an alarm also. It came with it, so all good.

Issue with an alarm here is, nobody hears it. Thieves out here know that, and generally are aware of the fact they're remote.
The CCTV recording aspect is most appreciated by the rural detectives out here. And, being a small town farming area, I bet I'll be able to find who they are in a number of ways if I have video records, just in case we don't get any help from the police.

Whilst not legal here there is an alarm system in America that releases some kind of gas that makes the intruder collapse unconscious.

In a world where I am Premier of QLD this would be legal on day 1.

The only problem is the intruder can just get a gas mask. However like any security system it is about slowing them down not stoping it outright.
