Is .357 ammo easily attainable for Cat A/B?

Post by Dexer » 31 Mar 2016, 10:00 pm

I assume it is for people using lever guns, or can only handgun license owners purchase this ammo?

I notice articles such as this one: http://www.sportingshooter.com.au/news/ ... rom-monday note that the rifle calibers are 'grey area' though that may only apply to NSW (I am Vic).

Has anyone ever had problems getting the rifle compatible handgun calibers such as .357 with a longarm a/b license only?

Cheers

There should be no issue purchasing this ammo though they might ask to see the rego papers for the rifle, but very unlikely to happen. I've bought 44mag from several shops without question and I think you'll only get questions if buying a round unique to pistols such as 9mm.

Many, many , years ago here in the ammo sales were restricted by classification. If you were under the age of 21 you could only buy "rifle and shotgun" ammunition, 21 or older you could buy "handgun" ammo as well. Needless to say this was a pain in the rear quarters

I recall when age 20 being sold boxes of 22 Long Rifle ammo but not 22 Shorts or 22 Longs solely because the 22LR had the word "Rifle" in it's name. Some stores, back then a large number of hardware stores also stocked guns and ammo, would not sell any ammo to anyone under age 21 just to be safe. One of the local department stores had a clerk who would ask you what gun you were going to shoot the stuff in and if you told him a rifle, by naming make and model, like Marlin Model 1894 in 44Magnum, he'd sell you the ammo and just note it was for a rifle in the log book. I can not remember when that foolishness was dropped, but it made getting fodder for the guns easier after is was.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I remember seeing a 9mm bolt action rifle come up on gunsales a while back. Thought it sounded interesting and fun, but then i saw the price which was something like $3k, and moved on.

Subguns aside, we are swimming in 9mm rifles over here in the States.

In Vic there is no specific restriction, just the appropriate to the category of license.... so 38spl,357Mag, 44family should have no questions asked other than for your licence.....

If you did happen to have a rifle chambered in 9x19, other than, say, an MP5 carbine. ;) ..

you will not be sold ammo, unless you brought along your rego cert....

So, if you're planning a shooting day with a friends 9mm pistol....you can't buy the commercially loaded ;) ammo...

I've seen G3's and CETME's with wood but never an MP5. Also seems to have a long barrel. Curious.

Although 9x19 is Sambar legal in vic (and theyre big deer!)...... id prefer a more 'serious' chambering

All that BS about only buying cartridges on your license is NSW.

VIC your license entitles you to buy ammunition, powders and primers. Show it and go for whatever you want.
