Paper license (payment notice)

Post by SuperHans » 19 Mar 2016, 7:36 am

So I just paid for my license but the payment slip says "This cant NOT be used as a interim license." I was able to use my handgun paper one to by ammo and my pistol. Have things changed or is it different now? Also I sent a PTA off with my license, does this mean I can go in to the LGS and do the online thing to make it quicker or do I have to wait for it in the mail.

This sounds very odd. In Vic it says the exact opposite thing unless things changed since July.

Yea but look that one doesnt have the "NOT" sentence on it. Yes in theory it would make it a valid license but why would it say its NOT an interim license then when neither of them say it is one.

Must have changed. I got my license in Victoria about 2 years ago or something and the payment slip DID work as an interim license.

Alright, confirmed (in VIC), last week my friend finally received his licence, paid for on the same day. He then received the PTA couple of days after (applied for PTA at the same time as licence application). Same week, we went to our local fun store and walked out with funs. No issues.

Interesting part I did observe, is: he wanted to get two rifles and since he already received one PTA (paper), we thought we will just do the second on the day (you know, because we are in VIC lol).

Wrong.

What happens is: you receive your paper based PTA (if you apply on your own). At this stage PTA is usable for the lack of a better term, but not 'processed'.

You then pick up your rifle #1.

Then shop sends details and completed PTA #1 back to registry (usually done on Friday).

Then registry processes all acquisitions from all shops for that week.

Then your first PTA is processed and you are good to go for a shopping spree. So, if you happen to action your PTA #1 on a Monday, it will be sent to the registry on Friday and processed by next Wednesday (week and a half roughly). Then you will be able to do more or less same day purchases. So the very first PTA is not really 'active' for about a week and a half after your first purchase.

@Scope, first PTA - snail mail or online, you will still need to wait 28 days. You may get it, if filed online through a shop, a day or two faster, but 28 days more or less.

Second and any future PTAs however can be done through mail. That will take few weeks. Or done digitally, through a shop and that will be processed on the same day, fastest I had was about 20 minutes.

Assumption, and in Victoria common sense prevails, 28 days is your cooling off period. Everything after is just paper pushing since there is no reason to have you do another cooling off period, because you already own a firearm.

@juststarting - Thanks for getting back to me. I'm in SA, i believe we have the same 28 day cooling off period for the first gun purchase. No idea if we can lodge them through a shop for a potential same day gun pick up. SA is so backed up with gun applications and PTA's that they are processing from as early as October last year.
