Found some old ammo

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 08 May 2016, 5:59 pm

Gday fellas,
Today I was at my grandfathers ( he died seven years ago sadly) house which is unoccupied and is just used for visiting family members and i was looking for several kittens that had somehow found their way in when I stumbled upon several boxes of 12 gauge ammo , some .22 and .22 short ammo and most surprisingly , a box of .32 SW  . I honestly have no idea where Nono ( that's Italian for granddad) got the pistol ammo but I'll ask my dad later. Anyway I just wanted to know, am I breaking any laws by possessing this ammo? Thanks :D

Judging by the fact you have firearms listed in your signature, I'm guessing you have a firearms licence.

There no restriction on you holding this ammunition if you have a genuine reason, which it seems you do, and a firearms licence.

You don't need to have a pistol licence to have pistol ammunition. But some dealers won't sell it to you if you don't.

haha.. awesome. Had a similar experience about 10 years ago going through stuff that beloneged to a relo that had been dead 30 years. There's an old Sicilian saying goes somethig like 'the best word is the one left unsaid..' and another that goes like 'ask too many questions, end up dead..'

Like my nono always told me 'let sleeping dogs lay..'

Sounds like your Nono was a wise man :)

Right well thanks for that fellas, if I find anything else interesting when we clean the house ( think we had better do it soon cause it's pretty cluttered  ) I'll post an update :D

G'day NukeBOMB88,
AnotherMisfire is absolutely WRONG in his statement about the pistol ammo. Unless you have an pistol licence you may not possess pistol ammo, and commit an offence under Section 124(2) of the Act which may see you prosecuted. Unless you can show where that ammo is used in a longarm, ie: 357Mag in a lever action or other type of longarm. I am not currently aware of any rifle chambered in 32S&W, so dispose of the ammo in an approved manner, or find a make and model of rifle chambered for it, so you can tell the Police it is for a Cat A/B firearm.

UPDATE.
I have found that Marlin use to make the 1894 rifle chambered in 32 H&R Magnum, 32S&W will chamber and fire in pistols made for the H&R, so a reasonable defense is that you acquired the ammo to use in a friends rifle. I would still get rid of it unless you really do have a use for it, Cheers.

You know you'll be walking out of the store without the box of 22s(unless you pay for it), and probably without the 32s too. The dealer will say to you 3 things that will convince you to leave the ammo with him;
1-YOU are not allowed to possess it,
2- YOU are not licensed to 'sell' it (to him) and he's therefore not /permitted to 'acquire' it from you,
3- the best/safest/'right' thing to do would be to leave it with him so that he can 'safely dispose' of the ammo = he'll put it in the back and when someone comes looking he'll sell it for 10bucks... as 'old stock'...

So go to your nearest pistol club and donate it if you 'need' to get rid of it....

You never know, dealer might give you a discount on something else you buy for disposing of the ammo to them, rather than "buying" the ammo off you.

Could still be worth asking.

Sorry No1Mk3, I almost always preface with "in Qld".

I don't mustn't have been paying attention because I thought Nuke was from Qld.

On another note... Next time the kittens go missing we expect to hear that you've found a Lemon Squeezer!

Going off tangent a little...How old is the ammo? is it a full box? What condition is the box in? Reason I ask is that there are people who collect cartridges and there's a permit to cover this activity. My cousin is a collector and I regularly donate weird and unusual rounds to his collection. Let Google be thy friend and see if there's any value to the ammunition and then decide to either surrender it or ask a dealer to store it whilst you get the proper paperwork sorted.

Here's a box I came upon recently that I'll donate to the cousins collection. The stamp on the primers is quite unusual along with the price written in shillings and pence dates this box to pre 1966.

I hold a Cat A,B & H License in NSW along with a "Purchase and sell Ammunition Permit" so I'm fully covered.

I don't reackon it'd be worth much cause it's very, very old Norma ammo and the packaging shows the age . There's also only about 3/4 of a box. The ammo itself isn't in terrible condition but it's not exactly shiny new brass
