Powerheads in Victoria?

Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

It's thoroughly unclear. Given that there's a code for them I would hazard a guess they are legal.

They're Cat A in most states - but maybe it depends on the cartridge? They will be Cat A or B.

Going "extreme boar hunting"? Haha

We used to use them on the trawlers up north when I was a younger man. Used them on big sharks. We would set large hooks with a sting ray as bait. If he was still lively when we winched him up , we had a power head on the end of a 5 foot aluminium pole. Pull him up along side and POW!! . Had a .357 and a 12g head. Beyond butchering or marine applications I'm not really sure what you would use one for. Had to be careful to pop them in the head while underwater or you copped a face full of shark brains. The blowback on a land animal would be pretty unpleasant.

G'day bentaz,
Powerheads have been unavailable to the public here in Vic for a few years now. Same as NSW and SA, forbidden in WA, but were still available in Qld in 2011 but don't know about now. Same applies to shark bang-sticks, just can't get a permit to own one anymore.
PS: For those who don't dive, we used to make a difference between powerheads, which could be attached to a spear rod and fired, and bang-sticks which were one piece units from about 18" to 3' long and hand held. Cheers,

Can confirm that they are legal in the deep North.

Mate's got one as a commercial fisher. Not sure what you'd need to do to get one if its not for work though.
