Just a few newbie questions....

Post by Hunt2eat » 22 May 2016, 9:10 pm

Hey.

Just after some help with a few questions.

I'm newly licensed and just waiting for my first PTA.

I'm located in Victoria. Of that helps.
Q.1) of I head up to the Grampians to my mates family country house to shoot and there's no safe what do I do?...

Q. 2) is little river range busy? Can I just rock up on a Saturday morning and sit there and shoot all day? Do you have to wait?

Q. 3) how do most of you transport your firearm in the car?

Thanks for all the help.

Being an American I have a hard time relating to the situations you have detailed. If I go some place where there is no safe, the gun stays in the car, truck or goes into the house, where it is kept in either it's case or the lock box. In most cases here in the USA we are not compelled to have a bolted to the ground safe where ever we go

My range is open 7 days a week and only on match days is there any trouble getting in some trigger time. But that is as much of a case of residency as nationality.

Long guns are carried in their cases, either in the trunk of the car or in the cab of the truck, usually behind the seats. Hand guns will be either in their case or on my person. When I have to go in to government building where private carry is not allowed in the lock box that is kept in the auto for that reason.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

A 1) lock it in the boot, needs to be inaccessible to non licensed people. Victorian Law centres around "the reasonable man". As long as you make an effort to secure your firearm that will be acceptable.

A2) I have never had to wait for a bench in many , many visits to the range. You can shoot all day. There is no time limit other than the range closing once you claim a bench.

A3) lock it in the boot, or behind a seat. Needs to not be visible or accessible by a passer-by

Go shooting at your mates and enjoy yourself by relaxing on the 'what do I do with my guns.." fear. When I'm away from home on a shooting trip I never leave them in a car that is unattented unless absolutely necessary. Use common sense.

It does.

Laws vary greatly between states, so always make sure you're asking/reading about the right place.

e.g. in WA empty brass is considered "live ammunition" and not securing it is an office.

A few empty cases in the back seat is no problem in Victoria, drive into WA and get pulled over and you're potentially in trouble.

1) Day trip, just keep it with you at all times of course. If staying the night I would keep the firearm in my room (trigger locked, bagged, ammo/bolt in lock box) etc. and be aware of people you're sharing with. As you know it's illegal to allow an unlicensed person access to a firearm.

If you're going for days at a time, or want to go out you would need a safe installed. You can't leave it unattended and not locked up in another house just because you're visiting. If you're leaving it unattended it needs to go in the safe.

2) It can be full and require a wait.

If you get there early though there is always space and there is no time slot on benches. Once you're on shoot as long as you like.

3) Bagged, ammo in locked receptacle, and completely hidden from sight.
