I was in New York last week and was about to buy 308 brass when I was told that I wouldn't be allowed to take them out of the country, they would be confiscated at the airport.
Any parts, even scope rings can only leave the US through an approved exporter !

I would think the brass would've been confiscated on entering Oz anyway without an import permit?

"CUSTOMS (PROHIBITED IMPORTS) REGULATIONS 1956 - REG 4F

Importation of firearms, firearm accessories, firearm parts, firearm magazines, ammunition, components of ammunition and imitations
(1) Subject to subregulations (2), (2A) and (2B), the importation of a firearm, a firearm accessory, a firearm part, a firearm magazine, ammunition, a component of ammunition or an imitation is prohibited unless:

(a) the firearm, firearm accessory, firearm part, firearm magazine, ammunition, a component of ammunition or an imitation is an article to which an item in Part 2 of Schedule 6 applies; and

(b) the importation is in accordance with the requirements set out in column 3 of the item."

I'm sure I bought one of my Bushnells from the US, and I've definitely bought rings, bridges and bases from there. Got a Weaver scout scope mount for my Mauser earlier this year from the US.

Not necessarily, they have self loading rifles commonly available and less red tape to go through.
