Question about transportation of ammunition

Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

open to interpretation for sure. In NSW ammo is classed as an explosive so storage is legislated by worksafe rather than FAR. we're told it need to be stored in a secure container but it could be interpreted that on the way home from the gun shop it's "in transit" and not "in storage"

I'm yet to have an opportunity to have this tested but i suppose the day will come eventually. no guarantee the bloke in blue will understand the legislation better than me though

You mean like;
Plod: "Good evening driver, have you been drinking today?"
Driver: "I have a gun"..... Yea, that will go down well....

You dont need to say anything. If they run your plate or licence, they'll know you have firearms and might ask the question, but only if they deem the question warranted, say if you have a bunch of friends in the car, if you're looking a bit 'rough', if you're in Broadie they will probably have dragged you out the car by this point.... :)

Nope, only if asked answer honestly of course.

I've been pulled over with them in the back for random breath test a few times.

Wasn't asked, didn't tell, did the test and on my way no issues.

I honestly prefer to use caution in this area i have a large steel ammo tin that i have bolted into the boot of my car and a large padlock on it. If i ever get some over the top cop try to drag me over the coals it will be hard for him to have a case considering that i cant remove the case easily from the vehicle.

So... I walk into a sports store, and buy a pack of .22 ammo. They put it in a plastic carry bag and I walk out. At what point should it legally be in a locked container? Have I become a criminal as soon as I've stepped out of the door?

I always thought that on my person should be legal enough. (In a coat pocket, or in the car next to me etc). Different story if I get in the car, leave it in the plastic bag - drive to the supermarket and leave the ammo in the bag on the front seat whilst I'm getting my banana's ...but just for the transport to my home safe - am I still required to have a locked box. (I'm asking from a legal perspective, not a common sense one).

As I believe that it I loosely worded in weapons licencing act it needs to be secure you would have to be really unlucky to be screwed over by a cop literally walking from the store. I personally believe that as soon as you enter the car it should be securely stored. Define securely ask 3 different people and you will get three different answers. and with that being said its easier to go overboard then end up in hot water.

Well, I consider in my jacket pocket which I'm wearing to be far more secure than anywhere else... someone wanting it would have a fight on their hands, unlike anywhere else in the vehicle...

Worrying about walking from the shop to the car is started to get paranoid, sorry.

Obviously there has to be a transition point, the law doesn't require Scotty to beam your ammo from the safe in the gun store to the lock box in your car.

We're not the Greens, lets use a little common sense...

Pitty we weren't a little more paranoid when the government decided to start a firearms register, or in '96...

I'm just wanting clarifications about the law at the moment. I don't expect to get done by a cop for that presently, but I'm just wondering where the law currently sits, and what abuse it's open to in the future...

Just going back over the act again (in Victoria) - it doesn't seem as though there's any obligation under the law to carry ammunition locked at all... just 'secure'. Not sure where I got the locked container from... probably a gun club policy, or maybe just hearsay...

Arguable "locked" in the interpretation of "secure" there.

I don't fancy trying to argue how an unlocked box is secure (not saying other factors/situations couldn't be a part but as the law sees is, stick a lock on it IMO).

Arguing on... Secure = in my jacket pocket that I'm wearing. As mentioned previously - someone's going to have a much harder time getting that than grabbing a locked container out of my vehicle and running away where they can work on the lock later.

Even so... I'm choosing to go the locked container. It only takes one copper on a random pullover to decide differently, and bye bye firearms until you go through the whole process to prove that he/she was wrong...

I drove form Darwin to Adelaide in October 2015, bought $800 worth of ammunition, called the Police, they said put it in an Ammo Can plastic container with a padlock and not have it in plain view, drove back , no problems.

Maybe take a leaf out of the dog owners book and hang your ammo around the neck of your big ass dog when he's in the car
