What are you guys transporting ammo in?

Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

What are you guys transporting ammo in?

Post by vexesus » 12 Feb 2014, 1:03 pm

Hi guys,

Curious what you fellas are transporting your ammo in?

I've got a office lock box thing which would normally be bolted into a cupboard or something, too heavy/awkward though.

Suggestions? And VIC legal if relevant.

Thanks.

I dunno Vic laws but in NSW it just has to be a locked container so I use a plastic toolbox with a padlock on it

It's the same for VIC... You need a "locked receptacle" if I remember the wording correctly. No stipulation as to being made of wood or metal etc. like the storage requirements.

Likewise, I have an plastic container which labels itself as a "ammo box", it's just a strong plastic box which takes a padlock.

No need to lug around that lock box.

I'm using a steel ammo tin, its waterproof and i modified it by elongating the hole in the catch and welding a tab on the body of the tin on it so it can padlocked it as well.

I bought a hefty little tool box from Bunnings that is locked with a good quality padlock and in turn the box is secured to the seat frame in my ute with a Masterlock cable lock. Bit over the top? But no. One visit to my local range had two coppers awaiting and they checked by license, storage for carrying etc and they were happy with the set up. By the way, my keys to access my kit were not on my vehicle key ring but in the center consol, as a separate item. Seemed to satisfy them...not sure why, though.

Bugman,

Who cares if it's over the top anyway. Anything that gives you piece of mind (and gets the cops off your back quicker) is worth doing.

That 300 gun safe...

Gotta say, I'm doubting a bit that anyone actually uses one of them though. I've you've got 300 guns they're already locked in a building that's as good as a safe anyway.

Good publicity stunt though.

Found this older thread and no one gave the answer I would have given.

Question - What are you guys transporting ammo in?
Answer – in my car!

There is no law in Victoria that says ammo has to be in a locked container when in transit.
The legislation for in transit of ammo reads, (paraphrased as I dont have the act in front of me) “take reasonable precautions to ensure it’s not lost or stolen”.

While you are in the car it’s in you possession, if you are not in your car, lock it. Simple as that.
The locking up of ammo in a container in transit is a recommendation, and can be found in a few documents but not the legislation. Recommendations like the “wipe off 5” (drive 5km below the limit), the slow signs the road workers hold, the speed limit is the speed limit, you can go slower if you like but you don’t have to….sorry these 2 best I could come up with at the moment.

Cheers.

I've got mine in a locked box secured to the cargo barrier in my 4 wheel drive. It's not labelled or anything and just blends in with the other stuff. NSW law requires you to transport ammo in a "lockable" container. That's a little ambiguous.
If it's not wood and blued steel, it's not one of mine

.50Cal surplus can mate, doesn't matter how beat up they as long as you have a healthy seal you're all good.

And I just wrap those action locks that come with some rifles around the opening flap in such a way that you can't lift it up enough to unlock it. Not very sturdy but it does the job.

I have an ammo tin like stevo, only it's 10th hand and probably from Vietnam and totally dented, sprayed and has plenty of stink. It's got a good seal though and open and closes to lock just fine. I suspect I'll have it till I pass it down to my kids (who will prob kick it to the bin lol). Easy to carry and I can fit a few mtm cases inside.

I just got a plastic ammo container from my LGS.

Strong plastic, concealed hinges and covered lips etc. Lockable with two padlocks.

Nice and light. Not like lugging a little valuables safe around like I've seen guys do.

Similar to Stevo's except plastic.

Legal for VIC, not sure about other states.

You left out a very important word that the legislation does indeed mention; secure

"....ensure that the cartridge ammunition is carried and used in a manner that is secure
and is not dangerous";

secure would reasonably be interpreted as in a locked container, its not worth arguing when you're pulled over with your ammo rolling around the back seat so lock it, a milsurp ammo tin is enough...and a lot more stronger secure durable than a plastic container.

This topic got me wondering so I emailed the guys at the firearms branch and asked .. This is for WA peeps

Hello,

Ammunition must be stored in a separate locked metal box that is securely fixed to the inside of the cabinet. It must be constructed of not less than 2mm steel in compliance with Schedule 4 of the Firearms Regulations.

To store in a separate steel box outside the cabinet , it would need to comply with all the requirements of a separate cabinet in construction, doors and hinges; and fixed to the wall in the same way as the other cabinet in accordance to the Schedule.

When conveying your firearm in a vehicle it should be carried out of sight, unloaded and never be left unattended. The ammunition can be carried in their original boxes in a glove-box or storage pouch in the rifle bag.

I carry mine in a locked box, legislation or not.

You are correct with the wording however not the context.

Secure in this context means safe, protected, safe as houses, yes we can argue the meaning of “secure”.

Consider this;

If you read "secure" as locked box it also applies to “carried” & “used”. Do you use ammo from a locked box, do you know any one that carries a locked box in the field with their ammo in it.

Do you agree that ammo doesn’t have to be locked when carried in the field or when you are using it, if so you will also have to agree then that in this context it also applies to transporting?

Yes?

Cheers.

I just use a little red steel tool box I got from bunnings for 10 or 15 bucks. Also put a padlock on it just to keep any over zealous police happy.

My POV exactly.

Ditto, bit more than the 'little red' kind but yeah, strong toolbox just from Bunnings with padlock slots.

Fits the ammo and all the bits for the range in one carry case.

I use a plastic tool box with padlock, I keep all my other accessories in there that I use whilst hunting and its just a matter of getting the ammo out of the safe and putting it in toolbox, lock on it and off I go.

The 2 words dont apply at the same time.....carriage and use, obviously.

I tell you what, you argue the point with the officer over it when you get pulled over, as far as I'm concerned if there is room for interpretation I'll be safe instead of running the risk....I'll put a lock on the box during transport. Plod WILL interpret to your disadvantage.

Yes, when physically carrying in the field or during use at the range you dont need to lock it up....

You are correct, I did use the wrong word, sorry.

Firearms Act 1996
Ammunition storage:
PART 6—STORAGE
121 Storage of firearms under longarm and handgun licences
(1A) A person who possesses cartridge ammunition under a longarm licence for a category A or B longarm must store that cartridge ammunition, when the cartridge ammunition is not being carried or used—
(a) in the manner provided for in item 1 of Schedule 4; or
(b) in any other manner which the Chief Commissioner is satisfied is as secure as the manner provided for in that item.
SCHEDULE 4
Storage Requirements
(3) Any cartridge ammunition for the firearm must be stored in a locked container separate from the receptacle in which the firearm must be stored.

Firearms Act 1996
Ammunition carried or used.
126 Safekeeping of firearms and cartridge ammunition
while being carried or used

(4) A person who is carrying or using cartridge ammunition must—
(a) ensure that the cartridge ammunition is carried and used in a manner that is secure
and is not dangerous; and
(b) must take reasonable precautions to ensure that the cartridge ammunition is not lost or
stolen.

Which area applies to ammo in your car on the way to a shoot?
Its either “Storage” or “carried or used”

You go with storage,
I have no issue with your choice at all and no doubt some police read it that way as well.
Im going with carried or used.

Cheers.
