Provisional General Handgun Licence times

Questions about Victorian gun and ammunition laws. Victorian Firearms Act 1996.

Provisional General Handgun Licence times

Post by bladeracer » 15 Jul 2024, 1:36 pm

Couldn't find any current posts about it.
Anybody gotten into pistols recently that might have a clue how long the Provisional licence is taking these days?
We only get thirteen NORI's so I'm guessing they must be relatively quick, or am I going to be relegated to observer status for six months waiting for it?

Yeah, they recommend getting the full application in a month before the Prov runs out, but that's still five months. Until the Prov comes in though I have to do NORI's and I'm already skipping shoots to keep them going (13 max), bloody annoying. Even just three shoots a week you can burn 13 NORI's in a month.

Nothing as yet. Firearms are saying they're running about 60 days at the moment to complete new applications, so just a matter of waiting :-(
One member says it took his five months but the details were vague, he may have had to send them more info, more than once. I think ours are pretty straightforward. One member also told me it was three months to get the CatH licence after the Provisional, so expect the six-month Prov to run out a month or two before you receive your full licence. We've done 12 month Provisional applications so that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm saving my few remaining NORI's for fun ones. Next week we're doing something where I get to shoot five targets in four seconds. I can't get my head around their course of fire naming conventions.

I want to shoot blackpowder as well but apparently to shoot black they need solid partitions between shooters, in case of sparks. But for shooting black powder cartridges I can't see why that should be an issue, nobody is going to have open blackpowder on hand.

Recently got provisional (April) and it took 2 months and 1 day from "Application received" to "Application approved" emails.

Thanks Hawkz, two months is what they're suggesting. I'm nearly out of NORI's so rather than just stand and watch until the Prov comes through I want to get around some other clubs and see what they're doing. I want to try to shoot IPSC and Metallic Silhouette in the future so I need to find the places that are doing it. Are you down in Gippsland at all?

I've heard good things about the Sale Pistol Club so definitely want to get out for a look. I don't want to just show up at places though, I'd like to make contact and ask if it's okay to come for a look. VAPA offered to send me details to contact Sale, Warragul and Yallorn but I've heard nothing further.

If it is any consolation, it is like this in NSW, from memory. As I say to newbies at the club I belong to "be patient grasshopper" :)

Trying to find the pistol clubs is hard enough, trying to actually contact them verges on impossible.
But yes, patience is a requirement :-)

Nah, northern central.

Limiting NORIs to 13 is a pretty stupid system you would think they would want you to have as much practice as possible instead you have to work around trying to shoot as little as possible while trying to get practice while also waiting months for Prov.

I would say always give clubs a call or send them an email first rather than just showing up, from what I have seen a good chunk of them have a set time to show around new people etc.
