Cat-H license for a club?

Post by MRadd » 15 Jan 2026, 11:56 am

Hello,
Is it possible to register the handgun under the shooting club's name?
Can the shooting club have a Cat-H license?
TIA

I don't think so. Our club guns are held under the club captain's personal licence.

Our club has an amours licence and the club captain and secretary etc are also on the licence. It's so the club can hold a few pistols for new members training.

I'm wondering at the purpose behind such an idea. Here in Vic we can only handle handguns thirteen times in our entire lives while we don't have a Cat H licence. So, without a licence, it doesn't matter where a pistol is registered, you can't use it until you have your own licence. You can't use club pistols ever again once you have done your thirteen NORI's, unless you get a licence.

I can see that once you are licenced it could be advantageous to not have a pistol registered to you as you would not have to have secure storage at home, and would not have to do any mandatory attendances, you could simply attend the club and use the club pistols, potentially forever. But I doubt that would interest very many shooters. Our club doesn't offer keys to any members until they own a pistol, there's no point since they can't come and shoot on their own anyway without a pistol. And only committee members have access to the club pistols. So, without a pistol of your own you would have to organise to attend when a committee member is there to access the club's pistols. It can be done I'm sure, but it seems like a lot of trouble to avoid the very minor inconvenience of secure storage at home and having to do the minimum attendances required. Or am I missing something, is there some other reason for wanting to do this?

The minimum required attendances are essentially one shoot a month, but you could do them all in January and not worry about it until the following January. For reasons that make no sense to me, it seems most of these people prefer to wait until late November before trying to get their minimum attendances in.

Absolutely.
Perfectly OK for a Victorian Pistol Club to have a handgun licence!
Mind there is a fee involved, with the club treated as a corporate entity. This is in addition to the separate handgun club registration (and fee).
All three of the clubs I belong to have club handgun licences and this enable the club to own handguns for the use by members who for whatever reason do not own handguns but are licenced and also new members for training etc to use under direct supervision.

At least two of those clubs charge a fee for use of club guns for licence holders and have fees in place for trainees. Further only club supplied ammunition or factory ammunition is to be used in the club handguns.

In QLD you can only possess 1 handgun for the first 12 months of having your licence. So I just bought a few and put them on the clubs licence so I could practise with them when I was there. Perfectly legal. Then put them on my licence after the 12 months was up.

I don't know of any club that will allow a member to register a handgun under the Clubs name, due to the legal responsibilities and liabilities of those who are nominated as Authorized/Responsible Persons under a Corporate Licence. Our Club holds several longarms and handguns for training and members use, and at least one of them was donated by a member so he could use it, but not exclusively. We don't charge a usage fee but as Sarco said we only allow the use of commercial ammo in club guns.

I was wrong, that is how our club pistols are held, the club captain is just the nominated person.

I don't believe the clubs I'm most familiar with would allow somebody licenced or unlicenced to buy a handgun and put it on the club register for their personal use, but I'll ask at the next committee meeting.

All of our club pistols (currently 12 as two were sold to club members last year) have been donated by members leaving the sport.

There are no fees for using the club pistols and the club has ammunition reloaded commercially (Saffire Trading).

In Vic we can own three handguns in our first six months of holding a licence, an air pistol, a rimfire or centrefire pistol, and a blackpowder pistol. I bought several pistols before I got my licence but they were all held by my dealer until I was able to run permits to own them - storage fees apply for this. The dealer is able to loan you a pistol for several weeks for testing so we did this several times, once I was licenced. I bought fourteen pistols within the first twelve months of my licence.
