Plastic ammo box for transporting ammunition?

Post by jays » 29 Sep 2013, 11:44 am

Hi all,

At the moment I've got a 'laptop safe' which I plan to use for transporting ammo. It'll do the job but its awkward and heavy etc.

I see that there are half a dozen brands who make plastic ammo cases like this-

I suppose this is a bit of a stupid question as if it wasn't ok to transport ammo in them they wouldn't be selling them, but, just seems like a plastic container might be frowned upon a bit by the fuzz?

The VIC firearms safety booklet is useless on this, there is a 'transporting firearms and ammunition' section which covers some common sense stuff on transporting your rifle, but literally doesn't say a thing about ammo.

So what's the word, is it all good to transport ammo in these containers? Would be great to not have to lug around my heavy safe for ammo.

Cheers.

Sound reasoning, but you never know though knowing our Governments

If in doubt, check with VIC's firearm registry.

Keeping your ammo separate from your firearms is the primary purpose of the storage/transport laws.

Get a pad-lock for it so you can show you've made all reasonable efforts to separate your ammo from your rifles and you should be fine.

I did a quick Google but couldn't find it (you can do the leg work :P) but from memory the requirement is that your ammo is transported in a "locked receptacle".

There's no shortage of people using them. Like Monty said, just stick a padlock on it to show you've made the effort and you'll be right.

Yep, they do have 2 padlock holes. Just wasn't sure what the story was with it being plastic...

I'm 99% sure that they don't specify a material, e.g. steel, like they do with gun safes.

Pretty sure the it just says the container has to be "not easily penetrable" and "not easily accessible".

AFAIK, a locked plastic container (not a plastic bag or anything obviously) meets this requirement as far as the Police are concerned.

I've seen one or two that had shocking hinges... You could open them with your fingers if you tried.

Be sure to get one that's solid all round and you'll be right.

As you say, tonnes of people using plastic boxes without incident.

Just keep a lock on the box and the key in your pocket and you're all good.
