Remington M597

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 23 Nov 2014, 12:06 pm

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if it was legal to buy a semi-automatic .22mag such as the Remington 597 in Victoria on a cat C licence?

And if it is legal, is the 597 any good?

Thanks,

Category C in Victoria is classified as:

C - Semi automatic rimfire rifles (magazine capacity not more than 10 rounds); semi-automatic shotguns (magazine capacity not more than 5 rounds); pump action shotguns (magazine capacity not more than 5 rounds); tranquilliser guns.

The 597 has a 10 shot box mag according to the Remington website so it would be legal.

Haven't used one so can't tell you about the gun itself though.

Thanks for the feedback AusC and tactice. I have heard that Mr Remingtons quality control has suffered a bit of a dip lately but even so I might have to have a talk to my LGS and see about getting one of these rifles . The idea of a .22mag in semi-auto is just too damn hard to resist!

For the last couple of years it's been hit and miss judging by feedback around the net.

Some guys getting poor accuracy, or needing aftermarket work like bedding to get them to shoot, or getting nail drivers.

Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to as far as I can see. I do know a couple of guys that tracked down second hand versions of the Remington's they wanted instead because of this and they got winners.

Still tonnes of people buying them though so they can't be all bad.

I can't speak for years ago, my 2 are about 3 years old now though so from the newer runs.

Both mine were great right out of the box. Same for a mate. He's got a .308 which shoots just as well.

There are definitely good ones ;)

It's the nature of these things to that it's easy to find complaints and there will be more off them.

100 people will get great rifles and not say a word. 1 person will get a dud and scream blue about it everywhere they can.

Always pays to get feedback but I take complaints with a grain of salt as well when there are plenty of good reviews too.

Would love to have a Cat C license.

Haven't got the property for it though :( One day.

Would be cool.

Realistically running a big property wouldn't be for me.

It would basically be like buying a half million dollar shooting license just for the semi-auto if I bought a property
