Buying Gun Accessories and Parts Online

Post by Squiddy » 23 Feb 2016, 7:16 pm

Hi guys,

Just wondering about rifle parts and accessories that can and cant be purchased online and legally brought into Australia?

Is there a guide anywhere?

I'm looking at things like replacement barrels, bipods, rails, hand guards, wondering what I could purchase on Amazon/Ebay and have mailed to Victoria without being arrested? Not looking to do anything illegal, obviously wouldn't be trying to import a fully functioning gun etc.

Thanks

Thanks Brett, that answered pretty much everything!

Scopes, bipods and cleaning gear probably ok from overseas, no to pretty much any firearm part....

you can still import them, you just need to file a simple form: B709A with a small fee.

Scope, bipod, cleaning accessories (unless it's votive/volatile chemicals) not probably - rather, definitely - ok.

A major firearm component like an action needs an import permit and usually a permit to acquire. I assume a barrel would too.

Depends what state you're in and who you're getting the barrel from. Many states don't consider a barrel a firearm part, as such.

When importing my TruFlite barrel, the NZ business insisted i have a valid B709 (import permit) before they would ship it; must be to cover them from people blaming them when the customer hasn't done the right thing.
I called the Tas firearms people and asked about a B709A. I was told he didn't think i strictly needed one for just a barrel but after explaining the manufacturer's stance a form was emailed to me and handled promptly by the officer i was speaking with.

Don't rely on what i (or anyone) say here: always check for yourself in your local act & regs. If in doubt, ask your local firearms department or ask to speak with the firearms inspecting officer at your nearest cop shop.

EXTRACT OF CORRESPONDENCE:

Morning XXGWIONXX,

As per our telephone conversation please find attached a B709A Application Form.
Please complete and return for your B709A permit to be processed.
You will not need to nominate a dealer due to the fact you are only getting a barrel only which is not required to be registered in Tasmania.

If you have any problems please contact me.

Is it easy to get a PTA there? I will have my Vic licence soon. Might move down there too. What about shooting places? Can I pop into a state forest and fire a few shots?

I ordered some roll pin punches (fairly harmless, I would have thought). They're still going through Customs. Been 2 weeks and counting!

Someone is probably concerned you're importing "stabbing weapons"
