As I understand it you will need do:

1) Get a firearm license for the type of firearm you are wanting to buy (if you don't have one yet)

2) Obtain a PTA (permission to Acquire) through the state you reside in (aka Vic Pol in your case).

3) Organise for a dealer to do the transfer. (You could meet the seller at a dealer). I believe that NSW, SA and Victoria have an agreement between the states where you can use your Victorian PTA to acquire a firearm in either Vic, NSW or SA. (I believe this only applies to acquiring - not disposing, so you would need to go to a NSW dealer to perform the transaction if the firearm is registered in NSW). (Someone else might be able to correct me if I'm wrong with this).

Alternatively - if you don't want to travel to meet the seller - they could sell it to you via a NSW dealer. You could purchase it electronically. The NSW dealer could then ship it to a Victorian dealer who you would visit and hand in your PTA to acquire.

Either way - the seller will need to get a dealer involved - and they should be able to assist you with the rest of the requirements.

-pay for the rifle and delivery,
-advise the vendor of your local dealer,

{{ don't concern yourself with the mystery in between here}}

-wait for your dealer to call you
-Take your Vic PTA to your vic dealer and once your dealer has cucumbered you, enjoy your new old rifle...

The process sounds convoluted, but actually pretty easy process. When you are buying from interstate, (a) you are paying the seller, (b) who is transferring the gun to their dealer, (c) who (NSW dealer) will then transfer the gun to VIC dealer (pretend that VIC dealer is buying it), (d) then you transfer from VIC dealer to yourself.

    - Apply for PTA, make sure licence category is all good.
    - Pay seller
    - Seller to ship firearm from NSW via their dealer to VIC to your dealer. You need to inform the seller/NSW dealer about your dealer - so VIC dealer's licence number (call the shop and ask), dealers address, your name, your phone number, etc.
    - Your details will then be attached to the box and VIC dealer will call you when it gets there. Realistically - a day or two later when they process all incoming shipments and put it on their books. If you have parcel tracking, you will know when it arrives - just rock up, they will process it then (easier to ask for forgiveness  )
    - Pay PTA fee
    - Pay transfer fee (Frankston shop is pretty cheap for that)
    - Pick up your gun
    - Repeat :drinks:

Just give the seller details of your local dealer and inform the dealer it's coming.

Dealer ships to dealer and you pick up.

Dealers handle it all.

I have sent from VIC to NSW, was about $90 shipping/handling.

Dropped it off at the local, gave end dealer and buyer contact details. Gone. Fine.
