Gun safe keys

Post by whert » 03 Dec 2013, 1:46 pm

Hi guys,

I wanted to double check my responsibilities for keeping my gun safe keys safe.

Obviously don't have them hanging on a hook next to the safe or something stupid like that, but if there just tucked away in a draw somewhere in the house is that cool?

Do I need to secure them more than that? Or keep them on me?

Thanks.

From memory, they just can't be in the same room and have to be 'stored' in an appropriate location somewhere else in the house.

e.g. hanging on a hook in the kitchen = no go. Hidden in a draw somewhere is fine.

Personally I have a steel lock box in a semi-hidden location. Small key to that with me, and big safe key in the lock box.

How about on a hook with a little sign which says "Not the gun safe keys".

That's cool, right?

I dunno, it might be your best option.

That way if your guns get stolen you have written evidence that you tried to hide the keys

I think that's a bit like saying "no" while winking.

Still counts as a yes. :P

Hide them in the sink disposal unit. No one will go fishing around in there ;)

I grabbed a portable key safe from Bunnings. it has four numbered wheels with 9999 combinations. it's big enough to hold my spika safe keys and can be stashed in a draw or hiding place no problems.

Generally hidden in the house somewhere, like behind a picture frame, hanging on a hook under a bed or under laundry tub etc. You could even get a small key safe that you bolt to the wall, combination to get the keys to get into the safe.

I got one safe-key with my set of keys so they are with me 24/7.
The spare safe-key was thrown into a particular cupboard that I can't even remember which one it was.

You would be surprised how much void space there is in furniture, tip a set of drawers, computer desk or tv cabinet upside down and you might be able to find a spot that you could hide the keys with a latch or a magnet. Even hang them high up in a built in cupboard on the front section that makes up the wall in line with the doors (hidden from view) you'll find somewhere secure to stash them, in a draw not so good.

I heard it mentioned that only the licence holder can know where, and have access to, the keys to the gun safe.

So, I'd have the licence, but say I go out and leave the keys in the draw, the cops come and ask about it, if my husband shows, or gives, them the keys, we can both get into trouble. Is that correct?

I've already figured out where i'll keep my gun safe keys, and no-one else will have access to them (I have pissy teenagers in my house for godsakes!), but I'm just curious if what i heard was correct.

Any ideas guys?

Also, I plan on installing my gun safe in an old built in wardrobe. It's a wardrobe that barely gets noticed in this house because of where it is, and the fact that it hasn't been opened in 5 years. There's also a lock on the door to it, so i figure it's a good place. What are your thoughts on this guys?

Thanks Baldrick.

It wouldn't be an issue for my husband when he get's his act together and gets his licence. However, at the moment, finances dictate only one of us can go down this road, which is me! :)

I'm very happy! lol

I'll have the key to the small safe around my neck. That's the key that opens the safe that holds the gun safe key.

You can never be too careful these days I reckon

That's correct.

If he knows where the keys is he has access to firearms while unlicensed. And you'd have failed to secure your firearms correctly.

Then you have a nice meeting with a judge in court...

Yeah keys are great I keep mine in the sock draw in my bedroom at 12 Yakka Street Salisbury Park SA, but when I first looked at digital safes I noticed that off the back of the digi pad there is a small loom with about 4 or 6 wires and a 9 volt battery inside the digi pad.

I wonder just how hard it is to work out which wires to power up to crack it open ? .... I sure hope its not that easy because iv got my spika on order.

Sounds that way, doesn't it?!

However, I wish to clarify. It's my husband who has pushed me into getting my shooters licence. It may be that he's seen another car he wants to buy and he's softening me up lmao

All I have to do is ask nicely, and usually I'll explain why, but it's him pushing me lol

One of the local dealers works out of his home and has a safe room built behind a wall of cupboards. First time I went there and he opened a cupboard, undid a lock and the whole wall swung back I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen
