Applying for a licence before turning 18

Post by Skrunklers » 10 Jul 2025, 11:14 pm

Howdy all. Over the past few months, I've been looking into joining a local branch of the SSAA, and just over a month ago submitted an application in ServiceTas for a minor's permit.

Following the advice of a senior member of the club, I gave firearms services a ring and was informed of a four month backlog. In most situations I would be more than happy to wait, although this simply isn't possible as I turn 18 in November.

I was just checking in to see if anyone here knows as to whether or not it's possible to lodge an application/begin the process for a full A/B/H licence in the period leading up to my birthday, or anything of the sorts.

Thanks in advance for keeping me from looking a fool in the real world. :)

If the backlog is 4 months then just apply 1-2 months before your 18th birthday to give some leeway. So by the time they evaluate your application you will be 18.

You can surely lodge the application for full Licence but it will not be approved until you turn 18. Whilst someone on the phone may say there is a 4 month backlog it is not set in stone, so you have your Minors Permit lodged, it may arrive sooner than expected so just let that run then as AlexJones said lodge your Full Licence paperwork in late September or early October.
