Flying with ammunition

OK guys, I'm going to Shot Show next weekend and plan to purchase a rimfire and bring it back to tassie. After doing my duly search online n in this forum, I understand that as long as my hard suitcase locks and I remove the bolt, I'm alright to have it as check in luggage. No need to inform jetstar prior to flight.

Now, here's the tricky part, I called jetstar and told them I'm bringing ammo n firearm back from Melbourne. The operator asked me for my make n model of firearm and also type of ammo. According to jetstar, they follow Qantas guidelines when it comes to firearms n ammunition on flights.

I'm a little confused with ammunition, do I have to specify to them exact type, calibre etc?

All I can suggest is call Jetstar or Qantas and ask what them the question. Or read the qantas guidelines.

I found this on the qantas website:
Carrying Ammunition
In accordance with dangerous goods regulations, the carriage of ammunition requires operator
(airline) approval.
NOTE: A copy of the approval must be carried and presented at check-in.
Qantas Dangerous Goods will issue approval to an individual for the carriage of ammunition on
receipt of the following:
 the passenger’s full name;
 firearms license number ;
 firearms license expiry date;
 amount of ammunition (max 5kg* ); and
 flight details.
For all approval requests or additional information please email [email protected]
The maximum allowance is 5kg* gross per passenger and the following is applicable:
 ammunition is not permitted in the aircraft cabin;
 allowances for more than one passenger cannot be combined;
 ammunition must be securely packaged - individually separated in a container;
 ammunition may be packed in checked baggage with other personal items; and
 there must be no indication on the suitcase to identify the contents.
* NOTE: In accordance with the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), when travelling to,
from or through South Africa, a 200 round restriction is applicable.

Just a thought….will you actually be able to purchase and walk out of there with it?

I would be surprised if you could, unless you collect it off site over the weekend.

Just check it out so that you are not left feeling let down on the day.

I'd definitely mention it on check-in.

It's not like you're hiding anything after all so there is no reason not to, could just make it go a bit smoother if someone picks it up without you telling and decides to pull you aside for whatever reason.
