Permanent storage of firearms in a vehicle

Questions about Tasmanian fun and ammunition laws. Tasmanian Firearms Act 1996.

Permanent storage of firearms in a vehicle

Post by zobster » 05 Jul 2015, 9:53 pm

I have done everything by the book and have been inspected and passed inspection.

Quick question, in the guidelines, it says that receptacles have to be bolted down or more than 150kgs. Can I have a 150kgs safe in my car and keep my firearms permanently in it?

Is the above idea stupid or am I alright to do that?

Rather, am I in compliance with storage requirements?

Perhaps you can install laminated bullet proof glass all round and just call your car a safe ?

Erm, I shall take that as a bit of harmless sarcasm.

I'm after some constructive answers to prepare myself for the unfortunate scenario that I can't install a safe due to any reasons whatsoever.

I think you'll find that safe storage must be attached to a physical address and can't be applied to a car.

I'm not sure what state your from but in vic you have to have a genuine reason for having guns in your car as in going hunting sighting in and so on you can get in a bit of trouble for having them in your car just coz you want them there

Definitely not.

Thought I'd be stating the obvious here but the weight of the safe means nothing when it's pre-loaded in a vehicle to drive off with it.

Steal the car, steal the safe.

I get what you're asking but I think you kind of already know the answer really...

I can't say that I've ever seen it specifically say in any ACT "storage is only in a house" but it's inferred throughout the legislation that "storage" means inside a structure. e.g.

_(b)_ a receptacle that weighs less than 150 kg when empty must be fixed to a wall or floor in a manner that prevents easy removal;

Wall, floor... Obviously the context of the storage requirements is set in a structure.

And frankly it's understood by all that storage means a structure, and a vehicle is for transporting firearms only.

It's not 150kg safe wherever you place it. By that logic you could bolt it to your front porch out in the open or if it weights 150kg dump it on your front lawn.

Why would you possibly want to drive around with a 150kg safe permanently in the back of your car?

Not required for transporting firearms.
Kiss all your space goodbye for actually using the car for anything else.
150kg extra in the boot permanently is going to do wonders for your brakes and handling

There was a guy at our club who was traveling around Australia in a caravan with his safe fixed inside. If was a financial member and maintained his required attendance at other SSAA club's around the country but slipped through the cracks so to speak. Once registry found out they took away his licence and guns.

Im sure i read in the nsw storage must be to a building
Do I have to secure my receptacle to the premises?
Yes. If the receptacle used for storing the firearms weighs less than 150kg (when empty), the receptacle must be
secured to the structure of the building. The receptacle should be secured by way of expanding anchor bolts (or similar)
fixed internally through the base and/or back of the receptacle. The securing points should not be visible or accessible
externally from the receptacle.
* When mounted onto brick, stone or concrete, it should be attached by at least four (4) masonry anchors 90mm in

Fair to say it's understood by all that a safe is installed in a building. IMO.
