PTA knockbacks for certain rifle calibres

Post by Rossi » 22 Jan 2014, 12:00 am

Hi guys. I recentluly submitted a PTA for a .45-70 lever action rifle. I've read some places that firearms branch can knock you back with your PTA's if they deem the calibre of the rifle you want "too big".

.45-70 is a large calibre, though I know it's effective range to be quite low.

Question is, do you think I'll get knocked back? In my belief I shouldn't.

You should be fine with a 45-70. I think the only calibre they're knocking back is 50.

He's asking about the police refusing it issue a permit, not the store refusing to accept it.

45-70 isn't the kind of cartridge their worried about. You'll be fine.

It's .50 BMG and .338 Lapua Magnum that people are getting knocked back on.

Cheers for the responses guys. Just had to be sure

And yes, to clarify marksmanvic, I meant the police refusing to approve the PTA, not the vendor refusing to accept an approved PTA.

The actual calibre (e.g. bullet diameter) is basically irrelevant in this. It's the effective range they're worried about.

e.g.

.458 lott is a "big" calibre but they drop like a stone compared to "modern" cartridges.

.338 Lapua Magnum is a "smaller" calibre than the .458 lott, but goes miles further.

Nah, Rossi.

Has to have scary words like "Lapua" in the name to get knocked back.
